A stationary trough of low pressure centered over Nevada introduced strong westerly vertical shear to northern Arizona. This shear combined with the ever present monsoon moisture to produce numerous reports of severe weather across Yavapai county. The tornado 8 miles east of Chino Valley was observed to land in an open field and did no damage. Lightning started a house fire in Cottonwood.
Strong thunderstorm winds snapped a tree trunk greater than 12 inches in diameter in front of the Clemenceau Heritage Museum. The thunderstorm also produced penny sized hail and over an inch of rain in 30 minutes.
Heavy rain from a thunderstorm fell over the Cottonwood area. Rainfall rates exceeded 2.00 inches an hour in some reports. Street flooding was reported all over town by the Cottonwood Police Department.
Three to five inches of rain fell in the Cottonwood area. Roads washed out and concrete slabs were displaced. Several homes had six to twelve inches of water in them.
