How the name was read

Each atlas was set in type by a different hand and scanned decades later, so the same establishment comes back spelled differently. Every reading below was produced by the recogniser from the sheets; none was corrected or invented. They are published so a search for any of them finds this page.

On the National Register

First Baptist Church Matched to this establishment on the distinguishing word baptist.

Named in the 1897 county history

The history of Essex County was published 5 years after the first of these atlases, and it names this establishment.

ISOl. - March 25th, the First Baptist Church of Beverly was organized, and a meeting-house erected the same year, on Cabot Street, nearly opposite Elliot, with the Rev. Joshua Young as pastor. He departed in 1802, and in 1803, in June, he was succeeded by Rev. Elisha S. Williams, a graduate of Yale College, who ministered until 1812, when he resigned. In early life, Mr. Williams had served under Washington, on Long Island ; in his later years he returned to Beverly, and died here in 1845, at the home of Mrs. Samuel S. Ober, his daughter, at the age of eighty-seven years, four months.

Provenance

Read by machine from the printed index of the Sanborn fire insurance atlases of Methuen, Massachusetts, held by the Library of Congress. Sanborn atlases published before 1930 are in the public domain. Only names that at least three of four independent readings agreed on are published, and no spelling has been corrected: what appears here is what the recogniser returned from the ink.
