How the name was read

Each atlas was set in type by a different hand and scanned decades later, so the same establishment comes back spelled differently. Every reading below was produced by the recogniser from the sheets; none was corrected or invented. They are published so a search for any of them finds this page.

Named in the 1884 county history

The history of Norfolk County was published 7 years before the first of these atlases, and it names this establishment.

Mr. Holbrook had the advantage only of common school education, supplemented by attendance at high school in Bellingham and Franklin for a short time. He has always resided on the old ancestral acres, has held various official positions, - town clerk for ten years, assessor, selectman for many years, - and in every position has ever been worthy of the universal respect and esteem with which the people, among whom he has always been resident, now hold him. He has never given a promissory note but once in his life, and that was to his brother in settlement of his father's estate, of whom they were the heirs. His politics have been Free-Soil, Whig, and Republican. special county commissioner two terms, from 1865 to 1872, has frequently been sent to State and county conventions by his town.

Provenance

Read by machine from the printed index of the Sanborn fire insurance atlases of Stoughton, Massachusetts, held by the Library of Congress. Sanborn atlases published before 1930 are in the public domain. Only names that at least three of four independent readings agreed on are published, and no spelling has been corrected: what appears here is what the recogniser returned from the ink.
