How the name was read

Each atlas was set in type by a different hand and scanned decades later, so the same establishment comes back spelled differently. Every reading below was produced by the recogniser from the sheets; none was corrected or invented. They are published so a search for any of them finds this page.

Named in the 1896 county history

The history of Huron County was published 3 years before the first of these atlases, and it names this establishment.

J. E. Wheeler was indebted to the country schools for the educational opportunities which he enjoyed. He pursued his studies through the winter months and in the summer seasons worked on his father's farm, toiling in the fields from the time of early spring planting until corps were harvested in the late autumn. In 1875, when twenty-one years of age, he went to California, where he remained for ten years, giving his time to various pursuits. In 1885 he returned to Ohio and joined his brother, J. A. Wheeler, in the mercantile business in Steuben, Ohio, until 1889, when he came to Chicago Junction and opened a dry-goods store in an old frame building.

Provenance

Read by machine from the printed index of the Sanborn fire insurance atlases of Huron County, Ohio, held by the Library of Congress. Sanborn atlases published before 1930 are in the public domain. Only names that at least three of four independent readings agreed on are published, and no spelling has been corrected: what appears here is what the recogniser returned from the ink.
