The history of Tuscarawas County was published 8 years before the first of these atlases, and it names this establishment.

The early pioneera of the military lots in the northeast quarter of the township included John Barr, John Burk, William Baird, John Exline, Lazarus Holmes, Wallen Miller, Jacob Laffer and John Ritter. John Barr was a Revolutionary soldier, and witnessed the surrender of Cornwallis. He came early from Washington County, Penn., and was an Elder m the Presbyterian Church, and located, settled and died on Lot 36. William Baird purchased and occupied Lot 4.
