Named in the 1897 county history

The history of Essex County was published 6 years after the first of these atlases, and it names this establishment.

William \\ Sargent, ICsq., the liberal donor of the public hall, was born in Amesbury November 24th, 18 19, and was the oldest son of Patten Sargent, V.m]. Mr. Sargent received a good education, attending the public schools in his native town and, also, the academies at Atkinson, Hampton and Derry, N. H. After thus completing his education, he served an apprenticeship at carriage building in his father*s shop. After completing his term here, he entered his lather's store as clerk, and was subse(|uenlly admitted to a partnership in the carriage business with his father, which arrangement continued for several years. Subseciuently he entered a firm for manufacturing carriages and dealing in supplies at Providence, R. [., and Taunton, Massachusetts, of which he became the principal manager.
