Long Beach, the town this property stands in, in 10 storm reports between 1998 and 2004: 3 flood, 2 tornado, 2 thunderstorm wind, 2 funnel cloud.
The reports record 1 injury. Each account below is quoted exactly as the forecast office
filed it, from the NOAA Storm Events Database, and each date
opens the federal record of that event.
A small tornado swept through eastern sections of Long Beach. The tornado developed over Los Altos Park and travelled northeast to Studebaker Road. The most significant damage occurred to a Lucky's Supermarket where a 60 foot by 60 foot section of their roof collapsed. Also...Cubberley Elementary School lost a section of its roof. Other minor damage occurred from fallen trees and power lines. One minor injury was reported.
The combination of heavy rain and clogged storm drains resulted in urban flooding in the community of Long Beach. The Long Beach Freeway (Interstate 710) was closed for 6 hours between Willow Street and Pacific Coast Highway.
Strong thunderstorm winds produced damage across parts of the Long Beach area. At a car dealership, the roof of a couple of service bays was blown off. Next door, a 600 square-foot section of roof was torn off a aircraft instrument company.
