Escondido, the town this property stands in, in 20 storm reports between 1995 and 2023: 5 flood, 3 hail, 3 heavy rain, 3 wildfire.
The reports record 7 injuries. Each account below is quoted exactly as the forecast office
filed it, from the NOAA Storm Events Database, and each date
opens the federal record of that event.
Heavy runoff in Spring Valley Creek caused 1.5 feet of water to flood Quarry Road and forced road closure for ten hours. Flooding in Escondido Creek caused water to run across County Club Road for two hours.
Creeks in the Harmony Grove area overflowed from heavy runoff, sending a river of water two to three feet deep rushing over Harmony Grove Rd. near Country Club Dr. Other roads in the area also had to be closed due to swift moving runoff and flooding.
Heavy rain with a few embedded thunderstorms occurred mainly over the San Diego County Valleys on January 30th, generally between the hours of 11 AM and 6 PM. Rainfall totals of 0.50-1.00 inch were common, with a few localized areas near San Marcos and Escondido receiving about 1.10 inches.
Thunderstorms produced widespread accumulations of hail across San Diego County. Most of the hailstones that fell were between 1/4 and 1/2 inch in diameter, however, a few of the stronger thunderstorms produced hailstones that measured one inch in diameter.
A thunderstorm produced small hail up to three inches deep in the Friendly Hills Mobile Home Park. The weight of the hail apparantly caused the collapse of a carport onto a car with minor damage.
