The 19 1 3 edition of R. L. Polk & Co.'s Columbus City Directory (its thirty-eighth annual issue), is herewith presented to its subscribers and the thousands of citizens and visitors whose daily and hourly use of the same will decide its value regardless of any claims which can be made by its publishers.
It is but fair to say that never in its years of publication has a canvass been made under such adverse conditions, nor so large an amount of money expended to overcome those difficulties and ensure the last degree of accuracy as has been required in the issue of the 1913 edition. The reasons for this will remain fresh in the memories of the citizens of Columbus for vears to come.
On the 20th of March, the usual time, the publishers made their first assignments of territory. Within forty-eight hours the continued rains made it necessary to withdraw all the force from the west and south sections of the city. By the morning of Tuesday, March 25th, the great flood of 19 1 3 was at its height and the entire West Side, from the river to the Hilltop, was covered by the rush of the waters with its frightful toll of lives and property. Then followed the three days of frantic efforts to rescue the living from the housetops, trees, second floors and attics and other places where they had taken refuge from the waters before they perished from hunger and exposure.

With the recession of the flood immediately began the rehabilitation of the entire section affected, t made possible by the splendid generosity and spirit of the citizens of Columbus and the nation at large.
These conditions necessarily compelled a postponement of the canvass for information for the directory, so that it was not until April 14th that the same was resumed with a full force upon the East Side. The flooded district was left until the last thing, so as to secure the very latest information as to the re-occupancy of the restored residences in that section. Inv addition to this precaution, at the last possible moment all the houses found vacant upon the original canvass were re-visited and the names of the occupants secured.
As a matter of interesting record the numbers that appeared in the street guide in the 19 12 edition on streets in the flooded district have been retained in the 1913 edition. Such as were swept away and demolished, leaving nothing but the foundations, are indicated by the word (Flood).
In the face of all this the publishers are pleased to announce that the issue of the directory has been delayed barely twenty days beyond its usual date of publication. It is submitted with confidence that the extra efforts made to overcome the difficulties that attended its issue and the improvements made in its general appearance will be appreciated by the patrons who have so generously supported it.
As the capital of the great state of Ohio, Columbus is specially favored by its central location in the state with lines of both steam and electric railways radiating in every direction. It contains within its borders the following state institutions : The Ohio State University, The Columbus State Hospital, The State School for the Blind, The State School for the Deaf and Dumb, The Ohio Penitentiary, and The Institu- tion for the Feeble Minded.
Columbus, as a manufacturing and distributing point, has all the advantages that accrue from sixteen divisions of nine railroads centering here, furnishing unlimited factory sites along the miles of trackage within the city limits. Reciprocal switching arrangements for carload freight, in effect between all railroads, gives the shipper choice of routes without extra cost.
Eight tickets for a quarter, with universal transfer, over 127 miles of perfectly equipped street railway service is an attraction to wage earners which is an important factor in securing and retaining good labor.
During the year an energetic campaign was conducted for the re- organizing and unifying of the commercial, industrial and professional interests of the city into one compact organization with but the single purpose of making Columbus known to the world as "The City of Opportunity." Nearly fifteen hundred of the most active business men of the city are now included in its membership, with Kenneth D. Wood, secretary of The Central Ohio Paper Company, as president; Clyde O. Haines, president of The C. O. Haines Co., as first vice-president; A. W. Hershey, president of The Hershey-Rice Mfg. Co., as second vice- president; Edwin R. Sharp, president of The State Savings Bank and Trust Co., as treasurer, and Francis H. Hysell as acting secretary.
Application to the Chamber of Commerce will secure full informa- tion as to locations and factory sites and the advantages to be obtained from a location in Columbus of any enterprise or industry.
Columbus includes within its corporate limits an area of 21.95 square miles. The government census enumeration is necessarily made within these limits. On the contrary the canvass for information for the city directory extends beyond these limits in all directions and includes all who are a part of the city's real population.
The increase in the population for the past twenty years has been a gratifying one.

A comparison' of the number of names in the 19 13 issue with that ,of 19 10, the last census year, gives an increase which now places Colum- bus well over the 200,000 mark within census limits without taking into account the population residing outside the same. #
