The parish comprises the townships of Bottesfosd, Holme, YADDLETHonPE, AsHBV, BoKBiNGHAM and part of East Butterwick ; the last three are given under separate headings. Bnrringham church of St. Peter is a large stone cruciform edifice chiefly e( the Early English period with portions of Norman and Deconted work, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave, transepts, aisles and a western tower, with embattled parapet, and eight pinnacles and containing j belle : in the chancel are three fine sedilia, credence table and piscina : in the north wall is a double aumlny and in the east wall are two small aumbries: the communion table, dated 1633, vasthegiftof Mn. Helen is a small stone structure, in the Early English style,

and has a now chancel, built by Iieut.-Col. R. Ellison : the

church was evidently much larger formerly, as two arches

that supported a south aisle testify ; the churchyard, which

contains a block of granite weighing upwards of two tons and

was formerly a part of the Sebastopol fortifications, and

brought here by Major R G. Ellison, m memory of the men

of the 4th regiment, who fell in the Crimea, also occupied a

larger area. The register dates from the year 1716. The

living is a rectory, with the vicarage of Bracebridge, annexed

BOUBIT is a parish, union and market town, poUing- ' place for the Southern division of the county, head of a county court district and station on the Bourn and Essen- dine branch of the Great Northern railway, with through route tn the Spalding and Sleaford line, 10 miles north-east- by-north from Stamford, 7 north from Market Deeping, 12 west from Spalding and 07 from London, at the junction of the roads from Stamford and Market Deeping to Sleaford, in the parts of Eesteven, Aveland wapentake, rural deanery of Aveiand No. a, and Lincoln archdeaconry and diocese. The town consists principally of tour streets, diverging from the Market place ; all remarkably clean and lighted with gas : the houses, modern and well built, are supplied with water from a spring rising into an artesian well at the northern entrance to the town: Spalding is also supplied with water from this place, by means of a separate artesian well, on land purchased by a Spalding company, under an Act of Parliament. In a field at the south-east of the town is a spring called "Peter's pool," or "Well Head," the water from which flows in a, strong stream eastwards, driving three mills within a quarter of a mile from its source ; from the Quay, in Eastgate, it was a navigable river by Statute, and was called the Bourne Eau, joining the river Glen at Tounge end; from this stream the town is supposed to derive its name. The church of SS. Peter and Paul is a large and ancient edifice in the Norman, Late Transitional, Early English and Perpendicular styles, and consiste of chancel, nave, aisles, south chantry and porch, vestry, a noble south tower finished or partly rebuilt in the Perpen- dicular period, containing 6 bells, and a portion of another tower at the western end : the clerestory is Perpendicular, but both arcades date from the twelfth century, and exhibit massive columns, with cushion capitals, supporting semi- circular arches: the font, a Perpendicular octagon, is interior was thoroughly repaired about 1854, new pews added ; three stained windows have been respectively pre- sented by the vicar, Edward Hardwicke esq. and Henry Dove esq.; the vicar also presented to the church in 1866 a new roredos of stone and marble : the west end was restored and three stained windows inserted in 1883 by Mr.R.M.Mills: the tower was repaired and the north and east arches opened, raised by the congregation, a new clock was also added at the expense of the town - a new pulpit was erected in 1 882, with money originally presented to Mr. Dodsworth and left by his executors to the vicar to be spent on the church at his discretion : a heating apparatus was also added in 1878. The register of Imptisms dates from the year vicarage, tithe rent-charge /20, gross yearly value ;f 400 with residence, in the gift of William Grantham Lely esq. of CarltOT Scroop, and held since 188 1 bv the Rev. Hugh Mc Heile Mansfield m.a. of St. John's College, Cambridge, who

resides at the Abbey. The Baptist chapel was erected at a cost of ;f 1,700 in 183s ; the Congregational chapel was erected ;f 1,000. The Cemetery of 3J^ acres, opened for interments in June, 1855. has two mortuary chapels, erected in the same year, and is under the control of a Burial Board of 9 mem- bers. The charities amount to about ;f 700 yearly, which are distributed as follows : - About /300 in clothing and coals at Christmas; j^sa los. quarterh' to certain pensionov: with other gifte at Lady-day and Michaelmas amonnting to ^^65. Here are two almshouses: one for 6 men and the other for 6 women, who receive a weekly allowance and los. extra every quarter to the male inmates ; both men and women have coal at Christmas. The Town Hall, a handsome quarter sessions for Kesteven are held alternately, here and at Sleaford, magistrates' meetings fortnightly,on Thursdays, and a County Giurt monthly. The Public Hall and Com Exchange, situate in Church street, was erected by a company in 1870, at a cost of /a,ooo, including the cost of land and fittings : it is a buildmg of red brick with stone dressings, and iias a large hall, in which the corn market is held, with stage and retiring rooms, and capable of seating 500 people : it also serves for public meetings and musical entertainments. There is a reading room and library at Mr. J.T. Morris's, in West street ; the librarj- con- tains upwards of 1,000 volumes ; all the principal newspapers are taken : the reading room is open from 8.30 a.m'. to 8.30 p.m. The market is held on Thursdays, and fairs for cattle, March 7th, May 6th, September 30th and October 2Qth. The Police Station is in North street : in the Market place is a handsome drinking fountain, erected in 1S60, by subscription, from the design of Mr. Edw. Browning, as a memorial to the late Mr. John Lely Ostler : it consists of a canopy supported on four shafts of Aberdeen granite, and is in a modified Gothic style. Here is a Savings Bank, which is held in the Town Hall. Bourn was the birthpUce (13th September, 1520) of William Cecil Lord Burleigh K.o. Lord High Treasurer in the reign of Queen|Eli2abeth and Chancellor of the University of Cambridge. Dr. William Dodd, vicar of Wing, Bucks, and prebendary of Brecknock, who was con- demned at the Old Bailey, February a4lh, and executed for wards went to Clare Hall, Cambridge. Bed Hall, situated at the south entrance of the town, an ancient mansion, with extensive pleasure grounds, and partially surroundetl by water, was for many years the residence of the Digby family, and has been converted into a railway station. In Edward the Confessor's time. BBACEBOBOTTGE is a pretty village and parish, with J a station on the Bourn and B^endine branch of the Great Northern railway, ij miles north from the village, 90 from London, 6 north-cast from Stamford, in the Southern division of the county, parts of Kestaven, Ness wapentake, union and county court district of Stamford, rural deanery : of Ness, archdeaconry and diocese of Lincoln. The Nene forms the eastern boundary of the parish. The church of St. Margaret, originally consisting of chancel, nave and aisles, was remodelled in a debased style, and its proportions | destroyed in the last century : in 1858 it was restored under the direction of Mr. Kirk, architect, and is a stone building in the Early Decorated style, consisting of apsidal chancel, nave, western tower with spire, containing a clock and 3 bells and south porch : there are three stained windows in the chancel and one at the west end. The register dates from the year 1593. The living is a rectory, yearly value ;£20o, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1875 by the Rev. Thomas Anit K.A. of St. Aidans. About i mile to the north-cast is Braceborough Spa, the springs of which yield dnily 1,500,000 gallons : one of the springs is enclosed in a bath-room attached to the house of Dr. F. Willis, in whose grounds the springs rise. The water is

noted for its remarkable purity and abundance of gaseous constituents, rendering it eminently suitable for drinking and dietetic purposes : it exerts also a beneficial action, used externally, in certain affections of the skin. Here is tiie pumping house of the Peterborough water works ; about > million gallons per day are forced through the pipes to Peter- borough, 14 miles distant; Joseph Ellis, engineer in charge. Shillingthorpe Hall, i mile south-west from the village, with gardens and pleasure-grounds, the residence of Mrs. Dixon, is the property of Lord Kesteven, who is lonl of the manor and principal landowner. BRACEBHIDOB is a rapidly increasing and pleasant village and parish, in the Mid division of the cotmty, county of the city of Lincoln, parts of Kesteven, hundred of Boothby Graffoe, Lincoln union and county court district, mraj deanery of Longoboby, archdeaconry and diocese of Lincoln, 2 miles sonth from Lincoln, situated on the river Witham. The Qnmty Lunatic As^hun is situated in this parish, on an eminence, on the high road to Sleaford : it is a plain build- sioee been considerably enlarged and will now hold upwards of 600 patients : the ground belonging to and occupied by the saylam consists of 120 acres, which is cultivated to a great extent by the spade husbandry of the patients. The Thole of the sewage is disposed of by irrigation over 10 acres of land about half a mile from the asylum, quite inoflensirely and profitably : the building and recreation groonds, which are tastefully laid out with flower beds, shrabs, and trees, occupy about 6 acres : a new chapel was acre on the estate, with a mortuary chapeL Brick and tile nuking is carried on here to a great extent. The Lincoln Gas Light and Coke Co. have works here, erected in 1 876-7. A reaerroir has been constructed for the supply of water to Bnicebridge and the south part of Lincoln, Thomas Fairfax esq. is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are C. C. The church of St. Helen is a beautifnl structure of Ancaster stone, principally of the Decorated period with Perpendicular additions, con- sisting of a chancel, clerestoried nave of 3 bays, aisles, north and south porches, and a western tower with crocket«i. spire and pinnacles, and oontaining 6 bells : the chancel was rebuilt in 1812 by the Rev. R. Sutton, then rector, and was again rebuilt in the year 1876, as nearly as possible on the original foundations, together with the north chancel aisle, which had been destroyed, from the designs of Messrs. Bodley and Gamer, of Loni)on, at a coit of nearly ;^6,ooo, in the Decorated style of the middle of the four- teenth century, a vestry being added on the north side : the interior of the chnroh is much lees ornate than the exterior, but is lofty and well-proportioned, and has a good Late Perpendicular roo^ whicji has been repaired, and the original coloDring, which was very periect, has been, carefully, restored.: the chsnoel is vsoidtad in wood,

with moulded ribs and carved bosses, and richly painted and gilded, so as to harmonize with the old work in the nave : the stained east wihdow is of five lights : the fine clerestory, lrghtc<l by fife windows on either sjde is Late Perpendicular : both aisles and clerestory have embattled parapets,' enriched with panelling and- blank shields ; the stair to the rood liift remains on the north side of the chancel arch : tiwre is a fine brafs eagle lectern, and chandeliers of iron, skilfolly made by the village ^locksmith, under the direetinn of the architects. BSIOO (or Glavfosd Bbioo) is a township in the parishes of Bigby and Wrawby, union and market town, head of a co anty court district, poUing-place for the Northern division of the county, and railway station, in the parts of Lindsey, south division of Yarboroagh wapentake, rural deaner}' of Yar borough Vo. i. archdeaconr}' of Stow, and diocese of Lincoln, situated on the rirer Ancholme, which is navigable for sloops to the Humber ; it is 163^ miles from London, 16 south-west from Hull, 33 north from the city of Lincoln, i5J north-east from Gainsborough, 19 west from Grimsby, on the road from Lincbln to Barton and Grimsby. Brigg was formerly only a small fishing hamlet, but it is now a thriving town of extensive trade, is well lighted with gas and partially paved, and the inhabi- tants are supplied with excellent water from St. Helen's well, about a mile from the toivn : the Waterworks were established by the late C. Cary-Elwes esq. The Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway Company has a station here, with extensive warehouses. Brigg is governed by a Local Board of 15 members, and in 1872 it was formed into an ecclesiastical parish from the civil parishes of Bigby, Bronghton. Scawby and Wrawby. The church of St. John the Evangelist is situated in the centre of the town, and was rebuilt on the site of an old fabric in 1843-3, at an expense of about ;£3,70o, raised by subscription, the stone having been given by Sir John Nelthorpe bart. whose wife laid the first stone : it is a substantial Gothic edifice, con- sisting of chancel, nave and square tower with pinnacles containing 8 bells. Cary-Elwes esq. and others ; also a Congregational chapel, Wrawby stmt Wesleyan Methodist, a large building, and Primitive Methodist, both in Bridge street ; a Free Methodnt in Bigby street and a Friend^ Meeting-house in Queen street. A Cemetery, situated on the road to Wrawby, a short dis- tance from the town, covering an area of fonr acres, was has two mortuary chapes, and js under the control of the Wrawby-cum-Brigg Burial Board of nine members. The weekly market is well attended and held on Thursday ; and a fair is held on the ^th of August for cattle and general commodities, and a hiring for servants on the Friday before Old May-day. Adjoining the union is the Police Station, a stone building where Petty Sessions are held every alternate Tuesday : the County Conrt is also hold here. A Corn Exchange was erected in 1850 by a joint-stock com- pany. The Exdiange Club is at the Corn Exchange, and IS maintained by an annual subscription of ij guineas from each member. There are news and reading rooms, which are well supplied with newspapers and periodicals. The Foresters' Hall is in Forester street, and is a commudions structure. There are two banks and a savings bank. V.
