Regional context, not property-specific
evidence. The National Weather Service names
Ellenton, the town this property stands in, in 15 storm reports between 1993 and 2021: 5 thunderstorm wind, 4 hail, 3 lightning, 1 tornado.
The reports record 1 death and 1 injury. Each account below is quoted exactly as the forecast office
filed it, from the NOAA Storm Events Database, and each date
opens the federal record of that event.
Lightning struck a 16-year-old male as he was doing yard work for his family's lawn care business. The bolt struck a large nearby tree and the boy at the same time. A large branch from the tree fell and struck the boy who was listed in critical condition at a nearby hospital.
Two empty tractor trailers were blown over on Interstate 75 at exit 224 by a microburst wind gust. Neither driver reported injuries. In a nearby landscaping area at the interstate exit, a couple palm trees were uprooted and several newly planted oak trees were snapped off near the bases.
A tornado touched down in the Tideview Estates Mobile Home Park and damaged the roof of one home, destroyed a carport and removed three porch enclosures. The tornado proceeded to strike the Blackburn Elementary School and caused minor siding and awning damage to the building before it lifted and dissipated.
The public reported, through Bay News Nine Cable, dime sized hail, from the intersection of Interstate 75 and State Road 43 in Ellenton, to the Sun Key Village subdivision along U.S. Highway 41 near the Manatee-Hillsborough county border.
