March 2003Tornado (F2)Miami1 killed, 14 hurt, $8,000,000The tornado initially touched down in East Hialeah, near NE 2nd Street and E 4th Avenue causing F0 damage to foliage. The tornado strengthened to F1 intensity as it moved east across E 9th Avenue. It achieved a maximum intensity of F2 with a maximum width of one third mile in an area from NW 37th to 27th Avenues in the Brownsville area. The intensity decreased to F1 as it moved east through Liberty City. The intensity further decreased to F0 as the tornado turned northeast and lifted just before entering Biscayne Bay near NE 70th Street.F1 to F2 damage began in an industrial area where several warehouse roofs were damaged. One large free-span roof was nearly completely torn off. Several semi-tractor trailers, apparently empty, were toppled, one of which fell onto two cars, crushing them. The tornado moved through a residential area known as Brownsville, heavily damaging 60 houses. At one of the homes, a 65-year old male who was sitting in this house was killed when debris penetrated the structure. His wife who took shelter in the bathroom was uninjured. A total of 343 other structures sustained damage, mostly to roofs and windows. Several vehicles were rolled over. Numerous utility poles were broken, large trees were uprooted and signs were downed.

September 2016LightningWest Miami1 hurtA lightning strike caused injury to a construction worker in a building just south of Miami International Airport near the intersection of NW 62nd Avenue and 7th Street. Lightning detection networks indicated lightning strikes in the immediate area around 2 PM EDT. Workers in the building were in the process of evacuating due to storms in the area when the incident occurred on the 7th floor of the structure. It wasn't totally clear whether the person was directly or indirectly struck.

An additional 8-15 inches of rain fell on top of the rain that occurred the previous day. Storm surveys after the event indicated water marks as high as 2-3 feet in Aventura on buildings and power poles, and in excess of 12 inches in North Miami. ||For both June 11th and 12th events, a total of 34 people required evacuation, mostly from vehicles stalled in deep flood waters. Damage assessments resulted in 160 structures with major damage, and 81 with minor damage across Miami-Dade County. ||A maximum 2-day rainfall total of 20 was recorded in Sunny Isles Beach, with 10-20 inches from Miami Shores and Miami Beach to North Miami and Aventura. ||Total damage estimate indicated in this event is the combined total of this event and the one from June 11th.

August 2017Flash FloodMiami$1,000,000Several rounds of strong storms and heavy rain fell across Miami-Dade County during the afternoon and early evening hours of August 1st. Activity initially streamed across Miami Beach, Key Biscayne and Downtown Miami just after 2 PM, then redeveloped farther to the west and southwest across The Redland, Kendall, Palmetto Bay and Pinecrest later in the afternoon. Rainfall totals of 4-6 inches were widespread in these areas, with isolated amounts of 7-8 inches. Virtually all of this rain fell in a three-hour period during the mid and late afternoon ending around 6 PM. Numerous reports of flood waters entering businesses, homes, apartment lobbies and parking garages were received across Miami Beach during the event. Water was 1 to 2 feet deep on streets in many areas of South Beach, including Purdy Avenue, West Avenue, Alton Road, Pennsylvania Avenue, Meridian Avenue, Collins Avenue, Washington Avenue and Indian Creek Drive. Numerous vehicles stalled in these streets and others across the city. Across the City of Miami, especially Downtown Miami, more than 10 businesses, stores and buildings in the vicinity of Mary Brickell Village had at least 1 to 4 inches of water inside their structures. This includes stores and businesses on SW 10th Street between S. Miami Avenue and SW 1st Avenue. SW 10th street was also closed for half a block due to deep water. Across the remainder of the county, there were reports of more minor street flooding along neighborhood streets.

Several cars were stranded along secondary streets near I-395 near Biscayne Boulevard. Photo evidence on social media showed stalled cars with water to the top of their tires. Measured rainfall in the area was between 3-5 inches, most of it falling in 4 hours or less.

October 2013Flash FloodSouth Miami$5,000Persistent heavy rains from slow moving showers and thunderstorms produced an isolated area of flash flooding near the Falls Shopping Mall in Miami-Dade County during the late afternoon and early evening. Measured rainfall amounts were in the range of 7 to 10 inches in the matter of just a few hours. The first report of flooding was received at 5:10 PM EDT with streets nearly impassable and the Falls parking lot almost completely under water. Several cars were also reported to have been flooded. Water entered structures in the Village at the Falls Condo development with the Oak Ridge Residential Community also reporting water intrusion into a vehicle which caused a total loss of the car. Residents moved their cars to side streets to avoid further damage. Some rainfall reports received included a local Ham Operator with 7.71 inches in his rain gauge near the intersection of Sunset Dr. and 97th Ave. with a mesonet site near 63rd Ave. and SW 120th St. recording 9.05 inches. The heaviest total was received from a Cocorahs observer in Kendall with 10 inches.

A few minutes later, same person observed a funnel touching down on Virginia Key in the vicinity of the MAST Academy. Wind gusts at NOAA/AOML were measured at 53 knots at 12:24 PM as the tornado moved through the area, along with a pressure drop of 2 millibars. Power lines were reported downed in the Alice Wainwright Park area near the intersection of US 1 and Rickenbacker Causeway. No other damage of note was reported.

Over most of Miami-Dade County, rainfall amounts were in the 6-10 inch range.

September 2021Flash FloodMiami-Multiple reports of flooding via members of the public and an off duty NWS meteorologist. Video reports were received via social media of street flooding in Downtown Miami and Brickell. Water was fairly deep in the right two lanes of Biscayne Boulevard southbound and water almost halfway up vehicle tires in a parking lot north of the Freedom Tower. Also, reports were received of standing water at knee level (around 1-2 feet deep) near Mary Brickell Village and adjacent locations, causing vehicles to stall and become stranded, as well as water encroaching on businesses. Sandbags had to be used to keep water from entering. ||Rainfall observations from the general area indicated about 3 inches of rain.
