Regional context, not property-specific
evidence. The National Weather Service names
Lutz, the town this property stands in, in 17 storm reports between 1993 and 2010: 6 hail, 5 thunderstorm wind, 4 lightning, 1 flood.
The reports record 2 injuries. Each account below is quoted exactly as the forecast office
filed it, from the NOAA Storm Events Database, and each date
opens the federal record of that event.
An adult male was struck and injured by the sideflash of lightning that struck a pole he was standing near along the 17000 block of Singing Wood Place east of State Road 597 (Dale Mabry) in Lutz.
The Hillsborough County Emergency Management reported that a female in her 30's was struck and injured by lightning on the 17000 block of Bridal Path Court in Lutz.
Nine power poles were downed and six more were damaged along a half-mile stretch on Dale Mabry Highway near Geraci Road. There was no damage to trees or buildings along the area. The area had been wet from rain over the previous ten days and this may have led to the poles being pushed over in the estimated 50mph winds.
Heavy rainfall of the three to five inches in less than two hours caused localized urban flooding from Odessa in Pasco county southeast to Temple Terrace in Hillsborough county. A few vehicles incurred water damage from the urban flooding at low-lying intersections, mainly in northern Hillsborough county.
Skywarn Spotters reported thunderstorm winds downed two large trees and snapped off the tops of a few others along U.S. Highway 92 (Dale Mabry) in Lutz.
A mesonet station 2 miles northeast of Lutz reported 5.57 inches of rain throughout the event causing minor street flooding. In addition, another mesonet station 4 miles west-northwest of Lutz reported 5.52 inches of rain. The gauge at the Hillsborough River State Park near Thonotosassa reported 3.28 inches of rain.
