Winter Garden, the town this property stands in, in 16 storm reports between 1994 and 2020: 8 hail, 5 thunderstorm wind, 1 tornado, 1 heavy rain.
The reports record 3 deaths and 72 injuries. Each account below is quoted exactly as the forecast office
filed it, from the NOAA Storm Events Database, and each date
opens the federal record of that event.
The Lake County tornado moved into Orange County about 5 miles southwest of Winter Garden moving northeast at 45 mph. It rapidly intensified to a category F3 tornado with estimated winds near 200 mph. The tornado moved through Winter Garden between 11:47 pm and 11:55 pm destroying a mobile home community in Winter Garden. There were three fatalities and 70 injuries. Five hundred structures were either damaged or destroyed.
A lightning bolt struck a tree and injured two children that were standing beneath it. The 14 year old male and 12 year old female were both transported to a local hospital with non life threatening injuries. The female was still on the ground when emergency personnel arrived and had burn injuries consistent with a lightning strike.
Several large oak trees were toppled in Winter Garden as a thunderstorm produced a locally severe microburst. One tree landed on the roof of a home and another fell on an SUV, causing damage. Large tree branches and powerlines were downed throughout the area. Three miles away and a few minutes earlier, strong winds impacted Lake Beulah and snapped a large palm tree in half. Based on damage photos, winds were estimated near 60 mph.
Several reports of hail up to golf ball size were received from trained spotters and the public in Winter Garden. Additionally, reports of quarter sized hail were received a few minutes later from nearby areas.
