Henn Mansion The Albert W. Henn Mansion is a large private residence of eclectic design located on Lake Erie in Euclid, a suburban community of 54,000 on the east side of Cleveland. The house occupies the northeast corner of the 32-acre Sims Park, at the eastern edge of the city's downtown commercial district. It is set well back from Lake Shore Boulevard, a busy five-lane thoroughfare. An asphalt-paved road, following the same right of way as the Henn driveway, leads to the house, to the east and south of which are two small parking lots and a traffic circle.
(noncontributing) of masonry construction containing public restrooms. Lake Erie lies beyond a grove of trees about four hundred feet to the north. At the rear of the house, the land slopes to a beach protected by several stone jetties. An asphalt path leads from the parking lot east of the Henn Mansion to a small wooden pier. The The two-and-one-half-story house is of brick construction with wood joists. The foundation is brick, with a brick water table at grade. Deep window wells on all sides of the house admit light and air to the full basement. The main block, rectangular in plan, is approximately 75 by 29 feet in size; the long, horizontal facade is parallel to the street. Two two-story wings project from the rear of the house.
One, approximately 21 by 25 feet in size, contains the kitchen and pantry, with servants' quarters above; the other, approximately 20 by 18 feet in size, contains a small breakfast room, above which is an oversize staircase landing fitted with window seats. The house has gable and hipped roofs of slate, with copper gutters. There are three massive chimneys of corbeled brick with stone caps. The exterior walls of the house are modified Roman brick (measuring 9 inches rather than 12 inches long), red- brown in color, laid in double stretcher Flemish bond with deeply raked mortar joints. Sills, and lintels with and a one-story bow window, each with rock-faced ashlar foundations, flank the central entrance.
The central entrance features sidelights and a round-arch fanlight capped by a simple round-arch copper-roofed canopy the corners of the main block, together with the shingle-clad, gable-roofed sleeping porches in the east and west elevations, give the house the air of the Bungalow/Craftsman style despite its large size. Description (8-86) pier, together with a small picnic shelter just above the beach, are both noncontributing structures.

Henn Mansion Euclid, Cuyahoga County, Ohio Inside, the original plan and finishes of the four-bedroom, five-bath house are substantially intact. A small vestibule with ceramic-tile floor leads to a large center hall with wood-paneled walls and a wide central staircase with wrought-iron railings and bronze newel posts. To the left of the hall, the living room features oak-paneled walls, a large bay window, and a fireplace with an elaborately carved mantelpiece depicting human figures of English medieval design. Off the living room is a sunroom and small porch, both with ceramic tile floors. To the right of the hall is the dining room, which features a bow window and a fireplace with a delicate, hand-painted mantelpiece. Off the dining room is a large porch with ceramic tile floor.
A side hall and vestibule, pantry, kitchen, cold-storage room, servants' dining room, and breakfast room (the latter tucked behind the main staircase) complete the first-floor plan. Upstairs is a large master suite with fireplace, bath, dressing room, sleeping porch, and walk-in closets; three bedrooms with shared baths (one has a sleeping porch); and two maids' rooms with shared bath. Baths throughout the house still have their original tile wainscoting and plumbing fixtures. On the third floor are a basement is the former billiard room, which features a fireplace with a simple stucco mantelpiece into which decorative ceramic tiles (one depicting the Mayflower) have been set at random.
Alterations: Sometime after 1945, when the City of Euclid assumed ownership of the property, porches in the east elevation and northwest corner of the house were enclosed and a large metal ventilator was added to the partition was added in the southeast bedroom; some hardwood floors were covered by linoleum tile; and fluorescent lighting fixtures were suspended from ceilings in several rooms of the house. At an unknown date, the fireplace surround in the living room, originally a Tudor arch, was rebuilt in a plain box style. Since 1996, when this nomination was first prepared, fluorescent lighting fixtures in the living room, dining room, and foyer have been removed and replaced by new traditional-style light fixtures. The ground floor rooms have been freshly painted and plaster repaired as required. The wood paneling in the living room has been cleaned.
Carpeting in the living room and foyer (including the stairway) has been removed and the hardwood floors refinished. The east porch was remodeled to the plan of Gaede Serne Architects Inc. with a new entrance door, double-hung windows, and handicapped-accessible restrooms. The basement has been waterproofed, and the slate roof has been repaired using new slates to match existing. Steps leading to the principal front entry and to the breakfast room at the rear of the house have been rebuilt to match the originals. Henn Mansion Euclid, Cuyahoga County, Ohio Several historic outbuildings on the property, including a one-story wood-frame bath house, a two-story wood- frame barn (three finished rooms above) with attached shed, and a small wood-frame chauffeur's cottage, are no longer extant. The Henn Mansion never had a formal landscape plan, although Albert Henn was an avid gardener. Jean Henn Mossburger, the Henns' granddaughter, recalls large rose and gladiolus beds, of which no evidence remains. She also recalls an allée of walnut trees lining the drive, remnants of which, together with Statement of Significance The Albert W. Henn Mansion, erected in 1923, is significant under Criterion B as the longtime home of a prominent Cleveland industrialist.
Henn was one of the founders and for many years president of the National Acme Company, an important Cleveland firm that grew to become, by 1942, the nation's fifth-largest machine 1945, represents the industrialist at the height of his career. The house is also significant under Criterion C. Vaguely Tudor Revival in style with Bungalow/Craftsman overtones, the Henn Mansion was built to the design of Cleveland architect Earl J. Andrews, who designed and the twentieth century. The Albert W. Henn Mansion is the only known example of the architect's work in subdivided and developed following World War II. With its slate roof, Roman brick- and shingle-clad walls, extensive millwork, and six handsome fireplaces, the Henn Mansion embodies a high degree of craftsmanship and integrity, while its Sims Park location preserves the historic setting of a small country estate.
Historical Background Albert W. Henn (1865-1947) was born in New Britain, Connecticut, the son of Francis A. and Barbara (Wilhelmy) Henn. His education ended with grammar school, following which he worked in a general hardware factory as a lathe operator and shipping clerk before setting out in 1882 for Cleveland. There, he took 'Harless D. Wagoner, The U.S. Machine Tool Industry from 1900 to 1950 (Cambridge, Mass.: M.I.T. Press, 1968), p. 369. National Register of Historic Places Euclid.It is also among the last remaining large houses on the city's lakefront, which was intensively wooded Sims Park, which is used for passive recreation only, preserves the historic ambience of the property.

Henn Mansion Euclid, Cuyahoga County, Ohio a course in commercial bookkeeping and worked for thirteen years as a bookkeeper for the retail firm of Levy & Reinhold Hakewessell, had developed a multiple spindle automatic lathe, or screw machine, for the production of nuts, bolts, and screws from bar stock.
The machine was a significant improvement over the single-spindle lathe because it carried out several operations simultaneously, greatly reducing machining time and labor costs. Henn and Hakewessell patented their idea in 1894 and the following year organized the Acme Machine Screw Company of Hartford, Connecticut. When the company ran out of money in 1897, Albert Henn, who had left Cleveland to join his brother in the venture, invested his own savings and returned to Cleveland to seek additional investors. He persuaded W. D. B. Alexander, president of the National Screw & Tack Company, to place an order for twenty Acme automatics.
Alexander organized the National Manufacturing Company to National stock In 1901 the Acme Machine Screw Company moved from Hartford to a plant at 7500 Stanton Avenue in Cleveland and combined its assets with those of the National Manufacturing Company to form the National Acme Manufacturing Company, with W. D. B. Alexander, president; O. S. Werntz, treasurer; A. W. Henn, secretary; and E. C. Henn, general superintendent. The firm prospered and by 1914 National Acme had become The First World War created unprecedented demand for multiple spindle automatic machines and their products.
The Stanton Avenue plant was expanded, and in 1916-17 National Acme constructed a second Cleveland plant on Coit Road at East 131st Street, equipping it with several hundred multiple spindle machines for the production of screw machine products.After the war, protracted financial problems led the company to close its Stanton Avenue plant in 1923 and to concentrate the manufacture of machinery in the Vermont facility. The company rebounded in the late 1920s, but was dealt a severe blow by the Great Depression. It closed its Vermont plant, moved its machine manufacturing operations to Coit Road, and largely withdrew from the screw plant, which still stands, is occupied by Acme-Cleveland's National Acme Division. The Stanton Avenue plant has been demolished. one of the largest employers in Cleveland. In 1915 National Acme purchased the Windsor Machine Company Stearn.
Meanwhile, two young mechanics in Hartford, Connecticut, Edwin C. Henn (Albert's brother) and produce standard screws on the new Acmes, with the Hartford firm taking part payment for the machines in Continuation Sheet machine products business. 2In 1968 National Acme merged with the Cleveland Twist Drill Company, forming the Acme-Cleveland Corporation. The Coit Road following year the firm was reincorporated with a capitalization of $25 million as the National Acme Company. Henn served as secretary of National Acme from 1901 to 1908, as both secretary and treasurer from chairman of the board from 1926 to 1932) until his death in 1947. According to his obituaries, Henn was also including, with J. L. Free, the Hotel Winton (1916). Henn was a trustee of the Cleveland Hospital Service Association and served as treasurer of the board of trustees of Glenville Hospital (now Euclid Hospital); in 1930 tending the gardens on his Euclid estate and at one time growing almost a million gladioluses at his farm, Goodhold, in Mentor. In 1889 he was married to Gertrude Jeannette Bruce (1866-1931) of Cleveland; they had six children, two of whom died in infancy. Albert Henn began purchasing lakefront property in the Village of Euclid in 1910, eventually assembling almost nineteen acres.
The Henns, whose winter residence was in Cleveland's Hough neighborhood, already maintained a summer residence on the Euclid lakefront when, in 1920, they purchased the 8.75-acre parcel on which Cleveland architect and builder Earl J. Andrews erected their new year-round residence in 1923.* Euclid was then a sparsely settled resort community with a population of just 3,363; Lake Shore Boulevard was unpaved. After 1920, however, real estate companies rapidly subdivided the land to tap the demand for housing close to Lake Erie and within easy commuting distance of the new industries springing up between U.S. Route 20 (Euclid Avenue) and the lines of the New York Central and Norfolk & Western railroads. By 1930, Euclid's Euclid never saw the large-scale building of homes for Cleveland's elite that occurred in Cleveland Heights, Shaker Heights, Bratenahl, and Lakewood.
Fewer than a dozen large residences were built on the Euclid lakefront, most of which have been razed. Framed by parkland, the Henn Mansion stands out amid the modest working-class houses and apartments that predominate. It is also the only known example of the work of Earl J. summer vacations, Andrews served as an apprentice carpenter in Cleveland. Following college, he studied at the New York Technical School and worked briefly in the New York offices of Andrews & White Cleveland News, Cleveland Plain Dealer, Cleveland Press, May 15, 1947. Andrews (1882-1938) in the suburb. Andrews, a Cleveland architect and builder, was born in Wilmington, Ohio. He was educated in the public schools there and graduated from Ohio State University in 1904.
During Continuation Sheet active in real estate, developing property in the Prospect-East 9th Street section of downtown Cleveland, *Cora Foote Narten to Gertrude B. Henn, February 13, 1920, recorded in Vol. 2372 of Cuyahoga County Deeds, p. 26. population had grown almost fourfold, to 12,751. National Register of Historic Places he served as general chairman of the Glenville Hospital Building Fund Campaign.He was an avid plantsman, According to Avery's History of Cleveland and Its Environs (Vol. 2, p. 363), the "Andrews" of Andrews & White was a cousin of 1908 to 1918, and as president from 1918 until 1925,when he retired. Henn Mansion material, and makes himself responsible for every detail of any given building plan and contract," Avery notes. By 1918, he had designed and built 136 houses in Cleveland, 100 of which were located in the Wade Park section of the city. Many of these have been identified as part of the Magnolia-Wade Park National Register Historic District (where two apartment houses are also attributed to him), and in Cleveland Heights and Shaker Andrews' designs are characterized by the eclecticism of the period, with elements of Classical Revival, Colonial Revival, Georgian Revival, English medieval, and Bungalow/Craftsman styles. Between 1908 and literature of Cleveland Following Gertrude Henn's death in 1931, ownership of the property passed to the Henn Corporation. Albert Henn continued to reside in the house until 1945, when the City of Euclid acquired the property.
According to Jean Henn Mossburger, Henn's granddaughter, the house was used as a school by the Euclid Board of Mansion was occupied by the Euclid Recreation Department, which periodically opened the first-floor rooms for parties and receptions. The house stood vacant until 1996, when it became the object of an active restoration from the City of Euclid.
