The only noticeable at the west end, the newer flooring in the ticket office and the presence of a small furnace plus some west rooms, but these are set toward the center of each space, leaving the perimeter walls exposed. They are also freestanding elements. The building was moved a short distance from its original site in 1909 when the railroad's construction of additional tracks to the right-of-way necessitated its relocation. It remains within the same property, however. The only other major feature on the property is a caboose from the Pennsylvania Railroad, a non-contributing resource dating from 1952. It stands on a small section of track about 30 feet east of the depot, on the same lot. The railroads tracks run a short distance north of the depot and there is a small paved parking lot along the south side of the depot.

There are also two old crossing signals placed on the property between the electrical conduits and newer lighting. The current owner has erected model train displays in the east and caboose and the depot. It displays all the characteristics of a typical small town Lake Shore and Michigan Southern depot from this period: wood construction, simple linear form, massive overhanging bracketed eaves. vertical siding, small projecting station agent's bay on the track side for observing trains, simple floor plan the Olmsted Falls Depot retains its architectural integrity and setting, and therefore meets Criteria Background History: In January 1853 the Toledo, Norwalk and Cleveland Railroad was opened for use.

The first Olmsted Falls depot was at Columbia Rd., a half mile east of here, in the center of town. By 1869, this line had merged to become part of the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway. In 1876 the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern built this depot. This was done as part of major improvements along the line between Cleveland and Toledo. improvements that included double-tracking the railroad a few years previously. The former depot site along Columbia Rd. was too small for a larger depot, as that land is closely bordered by the Plum earlier known as Division and Railroad Ave. The depot was placed midway between these two streets, as depicted in the 1892 atlas. By 1909, with the railroad in the process of making this a four-track line. the depot was moved.

In apparent response to complaints by residents that the depot was too far west of town, the facility was moved closer to Brookside, as can be seen in the 1914 atlas. This rail line became part of the New York Central system in 1914. The Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway was one of the eastern United States' major rail lines. linking New York City with Chicago via Albany and Buffalo. Controlled by the Vanderbilt family for many years, this rail line was a major source for the fabulous wealth of one of the nation's most prominent families For years, this depot served as an economic and social center for Olmsted Falls. It was a major point of trade for the shipping and receiving of goods by area farmers, merchants and residents. A spur line branching off sandstone.

The depot not only served as a point of delivery for groceries, coal, bread, hardware and mail order boxes for Olmsted Falls, it also served the nearby town of North Olmsted. In the early 20th century ten commuters from Olmsted Falls into Cleveland each day. This easy train link into Cleveland spurred the growth of Olmsted Falls as a small commuter village set within the rural landscape of western Cuyahoga County. After World War II the depot declined as a major center for the community. Passenger service to Olmsted Falls was discontinued in 1960 and the building stood empty for a short time. It was resurrected in 1962 and used as a craft shop. It has been home to its current owner, the Cuyahoga Valley and West Shore Model Railroad Club, for some years and has been maintained in excellent condition. network. with baggage and public waiting rooms.

10-90) United States Department of the Interior NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES CONTINUATION SHEET Olmsted Falls Depot, Olmsted Falls, Cuyahoga County, Ohio This building was built at the same time as the Berea Union Depot (NROHP, 11/80), which is similar in size but grander, with its rock-faced sandstone exterior. The Olmsted Falls depot also appears to be similar to the Vermilion depot, now used as a social hall by a nearby Catholic church, and the depot in Oak Harbor. The Mentor depot (NROHP, 1-78) is similar to this facility. The LS&MS depot in Stryker (NROHP, 8-89) is of effort to improve service on this important east-west rail line. The former LS&MS Southern Division has Falls, because there was a separate freight depot.

A photo of the demolished Kipton LS&MS depot from the book The Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway, shows that this building was shorter but otherwise identical to the Olmsted Falls depot. The Norwalk LS&MS depot seems virtually identical to Olmsted Falls and was also a combination station. with as high a level of integrity as the Olmsted Falls depot. This is perhaps due to the use of this depot as a continue serving commuters into nearby Cleveland The current owner acquired the depot from the railroad in April 1996 and is dedicated to its preservation. In other situations, railroads have been reluctant to relinquish these stations, fearing their proximity to active rail lines poses a potential liability. These have often led to mandates that the depots be removed from their sites, which would be retained by the rail line. This is what happened in nearby Bay Village.

Grafton and Avon, where historic frame depots have been moved far off their original sites, thus losing an important link to their past. While the Olmsted Falls depot was moved in 1909, that move did not change its relationship to the rail line it served and indeed took place as the depot was entering its period of greatest activity. Many LS&MS depots from the 19"h century era have disappeared and others have been altered. Few survive National Park Service the same period and style as Olmsted Falls.These were all on the same line and were built as part of an similar train stations in Oberlin and Norwalk.The Oberlin depot (NROHP,3-79) is shorter than Olmsted Section number 8 . Response to this request is required to obtain NPS Form 10-900 OMB No. 1024-0018 (Rev. 10-90) United States Department of the Interior National Park Service NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES CONTINUATION SHEET Olmsted Falls Depot, Olmsted Falls, Cuyahoga County, Ohio Section number The Olmsted Falls railroad depot is a one-story building, measuring 108 feet by 30 feet. It rests on a low foundation of rubble sandstone, has board and batten siding and features a lateral gable roof with broad overhanging eaves supported by decorative brackets. The building is Gothic Revival in style, featuring hood moldings over windows and doors, plus ornately carved wood brackets supporting its wide eaves. The round condition, although it was shifted on its site many years ago.

The depot stands on a park-like lot at the northwest corner of Garfield and Brookside, in a mixed residential-industrial area about one half-mile west of the Olmsted Falls central business district and a block west of the proposed Olmsted Falls National Register Historic District boundary. The boards are rough-sawn and are of regular width, approximately one foot wide. The batten strips have simple ogee-shaped edges and rounded centers. Accenting this siding is a wide wood water table, extending almost down to grade and partially concealing the rubble sandstone foundation beneath. Windows and doors are accented by label lintels formed of wood with pedimented drip caps. The large wood brackets are widely and evenly spaced on all four sides. Windows and doors are spaced so that they are centered between these brackets. which are about four feet on each end.

Windows have double-hung six-over-six wood sash and doors have four panels. They are all original. At the east and west gable ends. 3-foot diameter round windows are set in the upper gables and have divided panes in a rosette pattern with clear glass. These round windows face into an attic space not visible from the interior. Near the center of the north elevation is a box- bay projection containing four windows. It extends out toward the end of the eaves. The gable roof is covered with standing seam metal, painted red. Rising from the center of the ridgeline is a corbelled brick Interior Description: The interior has four principal spaces, plus some smaller rooms (see plan). This depot is laid out as a combination passenger and freight station, a typical arrangement for smaller communities. The center door from the south leads into a middle waiting room.

Short corridors along the south wall lead to the other principal spaces, a baggage room on the west end and another waiting room on the east end. The east corridor passes by a small office area that has ticket windows to the waiting rooms. The west corridor passes by a small restroom that seems like it was added earlier in this century. The walls and ceilings of the interior are finished with beaded tongue-and-groove siding, except for the west room, formerly a baggage handling room, which is finished with wide vertical board siding. Its ceiling is masonite board, suggesting it may have had a higher ceiling at one time. The floors are varnished wood tongue-and-groove set over a sub floor. The floor in the ticket office has a second finish floor laid over the original finished floor. The west room or baggage room has a wide plank floor.

Except for these floors, the surfaces of the interior are all painted. chimney. The building exhibits similar treatments and details on all four sides, with vertical board-and-batten siding. windows in the gable ends are notable architectural elements.
