NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES CONTINUATION SHEET Dublin, Franklin County, Ohio The Gelpi Mansion is a large private residence of French Eclectic design located along the Scioto River in Dublin, a suburban community of 29,000 located northwest of Columbus, Ohio.

The house is centrally situated on a 6 acre site that is bound by the Scioto River to the west, Riverside Drive, a busy 4 lane, undivided state highway, to the east and large lot single family residences to the north and south. There is a the road, and more severely in the rear of home, toward the river. An asphalt drive leads to the three-car contributing structures on the site. The Gelpi Mansion was completed in 1946 falling within the time period that the French Eclectic style was tower in front the facade, asymmetrical plan, field stone wall cladding, entry door set in simple arched opening with limestone details, full length casement windows, dominant cross gable roofing and wrought iron railing and balconies. This style became popular between the world wars due to first hand familiarity with those who served in Europe.

The house is two stories with a partially exposed lower level basement at the rear facade (photo 3). The floor plan is rectangular but rotated and broken at the circular communicating stair tower thus producing an overall lower level contains a recreation room, garage mechanical room, bar and kitchen (figure 3). The first floor is composed of the living room, library, butler's pantry, kitchen, dining room and porch (figure 1). The second floor includes four bedrooms, three bathrooms and a kitchenette (figure 2). The structural system of the home is made of a reinforced concrete foundation with stud framing. The walls are composed of uncoursed roughly square stone with limestone detail elements. The roof is gabled in form with predominant gabled crossing and a conical roof tower covered with slate with copper flashing, gutters and downspouts.

There are several special features that add to the overall character and value of the house. Two enclosed rear porches face the river to maximize view opportunities (photo 3). The porch on the lower level connects the kitchen through a side entry with the dining room and library. The second story porch connects all of the divided light steel casement windows, some of which are full height with a slightly arched window head. All have limestone sills and framing details. The doors are full divided light-paired wood doors and wood paneled doors with exposed wrought iron hinges. Lastly, the stone and limestone chimney hood contain a slate roof over the chimney hood. The circulation is along the front facade with the rooms facing river views. The include a circular staircase with a decorative wrought iron handrail (photos 18 & 19), limestone window detail surrounds and brackets, wood dentils at eaves (photo 13) and a custom mural in the dining room painted on plaster walls.

Upon entering the house through the main entrance the grand circular staircase is situated to the left along with the living room which contains many windows, a fireplace (photo 16) and a sunroom beyond. Directly across from the main entrance is the library with a fireplace and connection to the first floor porch. The dining room, kitchen (photo 17), a bathroom and butler's pantry are all located to the right of the main entry. The second floor contains a master suite with sitting room, bedroom, bathroom, fireplace and two cedar closets (photo 14) to the left of the circular staircase and four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a kitchenette to the right of the staircase. All of the second floor rooms are connected by a porch which faces the river.

The lower level contains a recreation room (photo 15) with half bath, kitchen and fireplace to the left of the staircase and mechanical rooms and storage along with the three car garage to the right of the staircase. residence in the early 1990's. The kitchen area, which once contained a small kitchen, a maid's room and pantry (photo 17). Directly above the kitchen area were two small bedrooms that have been converted into the house. They are completely enclosed with a stone wall matching the stone facade of the home. With only these few alterations, the house and property have maintained their historic integrity. The property situated along the Scioto River is not heavily landscaped with foundation planting but has large shade trees along the river and throughout the site.

There is a detached outdoor kitchen and terrace (photos 6,7) located just to the southwest of the house and is original to residence built in 1946. Response to this request is required to obtain NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES CONTINUATION SHEET Dublin, Franklin County, Ohio Statement of Significance The Gelpi Mansion, completed in 1946, is significant under Criterion B as the longtime home of prominent Columbus businesswoman, philanthropist and arts advocate, Eleanor Gelpi. Gelpi was the founder and, until her death, chairman of the board of Swan Cleaners, Inc.

Founded in 1937, the dry cleaning and laundry business is currently the largest independently owned and operated dry cleaning business in the United States. The house is also significant under Criterion C. The Gelpi mansion was built 1941- 1946, within the time period that the French Eclectic style was popular in America. The house contains many of the details that confirm its French Eclectic style including; a circular stair tower along the front facade, asymmetrical plan, field stone wall cladding, an entry door that is set in a simple arched opening with limestone detailing, full length casement windows, dominant cross gable roofing and wrought iron railings and balconies. The style of this house along with the stately property makes this a unique feature along the Scioto River within the City of Dublin.

With its slate roof, stone walls, wrought iron detailing and river views the Gelpi mansion embodies a high degree of craftsmanship and integrity. The use of limestone for construction has played an easily viewed throughout the community. Historic limestone wall and dwellings are seen around Dublin. including the 1832 Hutchinson Hotel at 6 5. High Street; the 1843 Zenas Hutchinson House at 16 N. High Street; the 1850 Buckley House at 126 5. High Street (all in Dublin High Street Historic District, NR: 4/79); the 1860 Albert Chapman House at 37 5. Riverview; the 1830s Old Stone Tavern at 83 5. Riverview; and the 1845 Dublin Christian Church building at 53 N. High Street (all in Washington Township Multiple Resource Area, NR: 4/79). An early example of a large estate situated along the Scioto River is the mid-nineteenth century William Henry Sells House at 6028 Dublin Road (NR: 4/79).

The use of limestone continued into the early twentieth century in part with the further development of large river view estates, often built as weekend and summer retreats by Columbus residents. Examples of this period can be seen at 2224 Dublin Road and 7016 Dublin Road in addition to the Gelpi Mansion. The property, in which the Gelpi Mansion is currently located, is part of a 400 acre parcel of land originally of the second quarter of the second township in the nineteenth range. Lots 14, 15, 16 and 17, all of which were 100 acres each, were given to the heirs of Benjamin Titcomb on February 26, 1801. The nominated property is part of the original lot number seventeen. Between the years of 1801 and 1913 the original 400 Krumm family. Albert Krumm began building the house, later known at the Gelpi mansion, in 1941. Unfortunately, Mr.

Andre and Eleanor Gelpi purchased the completed home and approximately 34 acres in 1946. Andre and Eleanor Gelpi lived in the home together with their three sons until 1957 when the two filed for divorce. Eleanor and her sons remained in the house and she finally purchased it and lived there until her death in 1985. Andre and Eleanor founded Swan Cleaners in 1937.

Although a pioneering and successful businesswoman, Eleanor Gelpi's true passion was for the arts. Gelpi regularly attended performances and events, and beyond that devoted much of her time and energy to nearly every major arts institution in Columbus. She held positions on many committees and boards of trustees; there can be little doubt that her leadership had a lasting effect on the arts in Columbus, making it the vital arts community that it is today. The following is a list of her involvement with local art organizations: founding member of the Greater Columbus Arts Council, Vice chair of the Ohio Arts Council, past president and chair of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, past vice president of the Columbus Association for the Performing Arts, trustee of Ballet Metropolitan, trustee of Opera!

Columbus, trustee of Ohio Citizen Committee for the Arts, trustee of the Organization of Ohio Orchestras, founding member of the Committee to Save the Ohio Theater and charter member of the Columbus Museum of Art. Of all the endeavors associated with the arts that Eleanor was involved with, she may be best remembered for her affiliation with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. At a time when society wasn't necessarily accustomed to women holding positions of management, the governing board of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra was made up entirely of women, including Eleanor Gelpi. Through the efforts of Eleanor and her female peers, a fledgling program was transformed into a respected, well-funded orchestra. Today's patrons owe a debt of gratitude to Eleanor's involvement of over thirty years with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra.

Gelpi served on the orchestra board from its founding in 1951 until the 1980s. The Gelpi Mansion also played an important role in Eleanor's commitments to the arts. The house was used frequently for social events, fund-raisers and other gatherings that allowed for the promotion of the Arts. The prominent location of the house along the Scioto River was perfect for events indoors and outdoors, which was well used throughout the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. Gelpi was best known for her contributions to the arts, however she also devoted time to several philanthropic and civic organizations, including the American Cancer Society, the Central Ohio Diabetes Association, the Council on World Affairs and the Center of Science and Industry. Community leaders repeatedly recognized Gelpi for her tireless contributions.

Among her awards are two-time recipient of the City of Columbus Mayor's Award, twice named Woman of the Year by the Columbus Citizen-Journal, honored posthumously as one of the original YWCA Women of Achievement and awarded by the Urban League of Columbus. The Gelpi family sold the house and grounds in 1989 to the Mangini family who occupied the residence until 1999 when the City of Dublin purchased the property.

The City purchased the property with the intent that the building would be used to house the Dublin Arts Council and their gallery. quality of our lives, she would doubtless be thrilled to know that her former residence is being transformed into an arts facility for the City of Dublin. Gelpi, 1912-1985 mistress of Gelpi Mansion, 1946-1985 By: Michael Gelpi The house was built in the early 1940's (check County records) by Charlie and Sadie Krumm. Charles Krumm was a partner in the law firm Krumm and Schwenker and a principal in Franklin Federal Savings and Loan. The Kurmm's bought the site in the 1920's (check County records) as a place to build a weekend and summer retreat (7075).

At that time, many of the Columbus's house on the property (7049) was existing at the time and they used it as a caretakers house. The Krumm's had long dreamed of building a large country house on the property in which to raise their two sons (Albert from their marriage and Howard Shepherd from Sadie's previous marriage). Sadie wanted to build a French style house and during a trip to France in the late 1930's saw a stone Norman style house in the Bois d'Boluogne (ck. spelling) outside of Paris. Photographs and memories in hand, she set out to build her house modeled on the one she had seen in France. (Architect and builder are unknown, but there may be some information in County records.) About six months after moving into the house, Charlie suddenly died. Sadie continued to live in the house with her children.

In 1946 she decided that the drive for her son Albert, who was in High School at Columbus Academy then located on Alum Creek Drive, was too long and decided to sell the house and move back to Bexley. In June, 1946 the house and property were purchased by Eleanor A. and Andre Gelpi for the then summer and weekend retreat. After her death it was inherited by her son Albert and was later rejoined to the main property after his death. The Gelpi's sold the house at 7049 along with several acres to Eleanor's brother Clem Amorose and he and his wife Gussie raised their seven Andre Gelpi was a senior executive with F&R Lazarus and Company and Eleanor A. Gelpi was the founder of Swan Cleaners (September, 1937). At the time of the birth of their third son in 1945, Andre left Lazarus and took over his wife's rapidly growing company.

Eleanor cut back on her daily involvement with Swan in order to devote herself to the raising of her three sons, Michael, Peter and Paul. A fourth son John was born in 1950, but died in infancy. During the 40's and 50's the Gelpi Mansion was the scene of many memorable parties. Over 300 people were hosted indoors at the annual Christmas party. At that time one of the most coveted for an all American cookout, complete with Eleanor's famous spaghetti and meatballs, a full dance band and a fireworks display which would last for an hour or more. Other Dublin neighbors would often host their own parties in order to enjoy with their friends the Gelpi's fireworks. A new large horse barn was built in 1952 on the flat to the north of the house (now part of the property, which Eleanor gave to her son Paul and his wife Mary as a showed him extensively. For a brief while Andre tried his hand at raising White Faced Hereford cattle, but after numerous escapes by the cows, he sold them to area farmer John Thomas whose fields they seemed to prefer.

The Gelpi's separated in 1957 and were divorced in 1961. In the early 60's, with her children grown and almost all gone, Eleanor converted what had been a screened in, canvas covered summer porch to the rear of the dining room and library into a year round entertaining area in her death in 1985, - - 39 years, 2 months. She willed the house to her son Michael who later sold it to Debra and David Mancini, from who the City of Dublin subsequently purchased it. The "Cottage" was willed to her son Peter who also sold it later. Eleanor Gelpi's transition from highly successful single business woman, in an era when nice girls from nice families didn't do such things; to working mom; to full time mom, to a mom with community involvement; to "The First Lady of the Arts" (Columbus Dispatch) seemed to be just a natural following of the path laid before her.

Shortly before her death she was interviewed by a Her community service career began modestly in the 1940's as a volunteer, a member of one of the Wings of Nightingale Cottage, a residential facility for children with Polio. A rather typical fundraising erents; luncheons, hat shows, fashion shows and tea parties - - well, it was the 40's. Her ability to bring groups of women from varying local areas, backgrounds, circumstances and experiences together and get the job done soon led to her becoming its president. After the demise of the legendary Columbus Philharmonic, Eleanor Gelpi, Martha West and a small group of women decided to sift through the ashes, pick up the pieces and start a new orchestra. Their initial commitment was to provide as much good music as the community could afford and never to loose another orchestra to lack of finances.

True to their pledge, they slowly and purposefully they built the Columbus Symphony. As it grew, the CSO become known and respected as the most fiscally sound orchestra in America. Over time, as finances permitted, it was grown into the crown jewel of the Central Ohio performing arts scene and a major orchestra. cookout area were also built at this time, partly with the July 4h event in mind, but also to accommodate other large outdoor summer parties which often included a dance combo.The wedding present).

And so it was committee meetings, luncheons, tea parties, awards and thank you parties, meetings to plan fundraisers, cocktail parties, small dinners and large events to raise money.

And so too were there artist events; picnics for the musicians, appreciation parties for performers, George London, Isaac Stern, Irina Arkippiva, hillipEntremont, Vincent Price, Hildegard and a number of very talented but less famous artists. Perhaps one of the most memorable was an belted out arias, pop tunes and bar room ballads until the wee hours. while the fireworks were launched from the flat bellow. This gave way in the 60's, 70's and early Everyone called it a mansion, but to Eleanor it was a home, a meeting hall and an office. Mornings would find her in the breakfast room, now remodeled into a service area, cup of coffee in one hand, pad and pencil in the other, the phone cradled in her shoulder, talking to someone about something that was going to happen on a stage and what the listener could do to help the sponsoring organization accomplish that.

Those evenings that she was home, which meant there doing the same thing. To Eleanor moving and fixing things for the arts was her life's work and seventy-one, twenty-five was her office. In the 40's and 50's with the stables in full operation, she managed the estate with the assistance of a staff of eight. Later she managed with a staff that varied from two to four. While she did use caterers to help with large events, she, with the assistance of her staff, often cooked, cleaned; got afterwards.

In addition to leading the Columbus Symphony for over thirty years and a host of other arts and civic groups, she coached, mentored and cheer led for hundreds of women (and quite a few men) early targets, a man whom she had known since childhood and who later became a major community leader, was fond of telling the story about her initial foray into raising leadership level gifts for the orchestra. (At that time, the CSO had only had one gift over S1000.) In the 40's and 50's the first hill behind the house provided seating for the 4" of July partygoers, As the Symphony grew she recognized the need to mentor men into arts leadership.
