House Canton, Stark County, Ohio The French house is a 1-1/2 story brick Craftsman/Bungalow style building built in 1913 and located in a commercially developed section of Canton, Ohio.

Its position is less than ½ mile south of State Route 62. The house is approximately 1,558 S.F. and is basically rectangular in design with the exception of the porte cochere extending from the north facade. It is suspected that some of the brick came from the French's own brick was the Vice President of The Big Four Clay Company. The exterior of the house is constructed of brick and stucco and has distinguishing features consistent with the Bungalow/Craftsman style such as timber outlooks, decorative tail rafters, tapered brick porch columns and full width porch. The original craftsman style front door with sidelights is centrally located with the length of the covered porch. The porch has a bead board ceiling and concrete floor. The window design features multiple side of the front door on the front. The exterior also features a low sloping roof dormer on the west (front façade).

Minor alterations can be evidenced in the replacement of the roof with asphalt shingles, new aluminum cheek walls off the front porch have been removed. The left side elevation features the porte cochere extending to the north, heavy timber outlooks and a bay centered on the elevation. The windows on the second floor vary with 8/1 and 12/1 configurations. While the first floor displays 12/1, 8/1 and 16/1 configurations. The basement windows are single sash with two panes. The left side elevation has only a minor modification. Wood blocking has been added to the eaves for structural support. This was most likely added to prevent or correct sagging eaves.

The rear elevation displays many of the same characteristics as the left side elevation with the brick and also a The right side elevation is similar in nature to the left side elevation with the exception of the side entrance, and the addition of a masonry chimney. House Canton, Stark County, Ohio evidence from previous owners shows a two car detached garage to the east of the house. The setting as it and Cleveland Ave. NW. Directly to the north is a historic fire station that was built around the same era. The interior of the house is also a fine example of the style of house. It features high wood wainscoting with plate shelf, pocket door with original hardware, a modest brick fireplace, and wood ceiling beams and original wood casings and baseboards. No significant changes have been made to the house since it was built.

The living room features high wood base, masonry fireplace and ceiling timbers. The walls and ceiling are plaster. The dining room has high wood wainscoting with dish shelf, wood ceiling beams and decorative bookcases with the remainder of the ceiling and walls being plaster. the two rooms is arched and the existing cabinets and appliances are from a later era. The den on the first floor is also a modest room with plaster walls and wood trim. The upstairs was converted to an apartment in the mid-1970s and a kitchen was added. This area of the house has the most modifications but the majority of the historic fabric remains. The building today retains its integrity. As noted above only a few modifications have been made. Additionally it is a structurally sound building. The site has overgrown vegetation with a few mature trees.

Additionally a brick driveway remains although it's overgrown in some areas with vegetation. No other buildings are currently on the site, although photographic The kitchen and the rear entry room are simpler rooms with plaster walls and ceilings. The doorway between relates to the building surrounds is highly commercialized. House Canton, Stark County, Ohio The French House is nominated under criterion C for architecture as a significant representation of Craftsman /Bungalow style. The French House's design is typical of the style of the early 20" century.

It is constructed of brick and stucco on the exterior and its distinguishing architectural features include timber outlooks, decorative rafter tails, tapered brick porch columns and deep front porch. The interior of the building retains much of its original character, displaying wood ceiling beams, high wainscoting with plate rail, pocket door, original hardware, modest brick fireplace and original wood casing and baseboards. In the early 1900's Canton was a bustling industrial, political, and social center. Its development was thriving and impressive homes were built on Market Ave. and Cleveland Ave. In 1914 this was the furthest northern address on Cleveland Ave. from downtown Canton. Canton was settled in 1805 by Bezaler Wells from Steubenville, Ohio. Its population in 1805 was 40 people and stands today at over 89,000 people.

Its population in the early 1900's was around 100,000 people. The French House was consistent with the early development of Canton. As the community was growing the Wells to Savannah on the east and west boundary. The Bungalow Style in Canton spanned between 1910 and 1930. The French House is one of the earliest examples of the Craftsman/ Bungalow Style in Canton still remaining. An exterior survey of more than thirty of the Bungalow Style homes built in Canton and East Canton between 1920 to 1925 and listed on the National Register shows the French House is the only example of that group with the primary façade treatment being brick. All of the homes surveyed had been modified with vinyl siding and the ones that retained their original façade materials were wood shake or wood siding. Additionally, two homes located on Cleveland Ave.

N.W., within several blocks of the French House were built in the 1920's and have similar detailing with the exception they do not have the brick extended to the eaves on the side elevations. Rather, they are stucco and wood shakes from the second floor to the eaves. We attribute the use of brick on this home to the original occupant of the structure. Garnet B. French was the Treasurer and later Vice President of the Big Four Clay Company and Treasurer of the Lincoln Paving Company. Several of the bricks in the basement of the home display a stamp marking that reads "Big Four Block." House Canton, Stark County, Ohio While several builders were known in the era to build bungalow style homes, and the plan is similar to many of the mail order/catalog plans, we can find no evidence to substantiate or verify any connection to these factors. In the 1914 Canton City Directory R.G. Witters Builders advertise as builders of mail order/ catalog plan Bungalow Homes showing this was a prevalent trend in the Canton area at the time. The Big Four Clay Company ranked along with the Belden Brick Company and the Metropolitan Paving Company as a leading clay manufacturer in Canton in the early twentieth century. Established in 1902 by Grover French, father of Garnet B. French, The Big Four Clay Company operated a 20 kiln plant in Malvern, Ohio with the capacity of producing 75,000 bricks daily.

In 1914 the French family established the Lincoln Paving Company, one of the largest paving brick companies in northern Ohio. Garnet B. French served as treasurer and later vice president of the Big Four Clay Company. He also served as treasurer of the Lincoln Marie F. French. They lived in the house until 1920 when they built another house nearby at 2400 Cleveland Avenue NW. Expansion of the commercial development is slowly overtaking the ring of neighborhoods that originally surrounded the city's core.
