Cleveland OH Cuyahoga County Narrative Description: The Van Rooy Coffee Company building is a three-story brick Romanesque style industrial building. It has round arched windows on the first and third floors of the main elevation and a round arched main entrance. Sandstone trim was used at the building entrance, for lintels above second story windows, and for third story windowsills. There is a corbelled brick pattern at the cornice. The building is located on the northwest corner of Detroit and West 29"Street (formerly State). Detroit Avenue is one of the main commercial streets in Cleveland, with both commercial and industrial buildings. There is no setback from either Detroit Avenue or West 29t Street. The rear of the building (north elevation) abuts the Cleveland Memorial Shoreway (formally Vermont Avenue).

The main entrance door and a door on the north elevation have been replaced with glass light and aluminum doors. Efflorescence is occurring below the first floor windows. The original four over four wood windows have either been repaired or replaced with new wood windows with the same profile. The south elevation facing Detroit Avenue is the most visible. The first floor has round arched windows with sandstone sills. There is a round arched opening with a radiating brick pattern supported by a sandstone column to a recessed entry on the east side of the building. The second story windows sit on a corbelled brick course. Second story rectangular shaped windows are second and third stories are subtly divided into three sections. The outer sections have three windows, and the center section has four windows.

The brick of the outer sections project beyond the center section, and are topped by a corbelled brick course. The windows in the outer sections are recessed. A corbelled brick course above the third story windows tops the entire building. The east elevation along West 29th Street is more utilitarian. The south façade treatment is carried on the south end of this elevation. To the north of the façade treatment, bays are clearly delineated by projecting brickwork and paired windows. On this side of the building, the first and second floors have rectangular shaped windows, with round arched windows on the third floor. the building. There is a Van Rooy Coffee Company banner sign at the north end of this façade. The north elevation of the building is separated from Cleveland Memorial Shoreway by a chain link fence.

There is a second banner sign advertising Van Rooy Coffee Company on this side of the building. There is an elevator penthouse at the northeast corner of the building with two existing Van Rooy Coffee painted signs advertising their products on the north and east sides of the penthouse. The north side of the building has a treatment of paired windows within recessed CONTINUATION SHEET topped with sandstone lintels.The third story rounded arched windows have sandstone sills.The There is one loading dock at the north end of the building and one garage bay at the south end of Van Rooy Coffee Company Building out in the first two southern bays. Cleveland OH wooden windows with segmental arched window openings on the first, second and third stories. The west elevation has been subject to the most changes throughout the life of the building. A addition blocked a series of first floor windows that matched the 2°d and 3 floor windows. A large semi-circular Van Rooy Coffee painted billboard, shaped as a coffee can was added in the mid fifties to the northwest corner of this facade. In 1999 the Van Roy Coffee Company removed southwest corner there is a large painted sign. This sign is advertising their Hotel blend coffee line highlighting the variation in spelling between the product and the official company name. Van Rooy Coffee Company marketed their company on their products with the spelling the products, as Van Roy with one O while the official company name remained Van Rooy with the double O spelling.

This side of the building has a treatment similar to the north elevation with paired wooden windows in segmental arched window openings within a recessed bay on the first, second, and third stories. The roof is a built up roof sloping gently to the west with no parapet on the west edge. The south edge of the roof has a parapet that starts at about 2 feet on the east end and rises to 4 feet on the west side of the building. This face of the building has a decorative brick façade and sandstone The building is made of post and beam construction. The solid wood post and beams are exposed throughout the building with the size of the timbers decreasing from the first floor to the second and third. The building has no basement and has concrete floors on the first floor with solid timber floors and decking on floors two and three.

The perimeter walls are mixed painted and exposed brick with no evidence of previous plastering or paneling. The interior spaces on all three plywood partitions with dimensional lumber that have been installed around portions of the first floor to separate the retail area from the roasting area and on the second floor to define two offices from the warehouse and tea areas. There is no staircase that continues through all three floors, however a freight elevator is located in the northeast corner of the building. The building Cuyahoga County sandstone capstones. bays similar to the east elevation.The window openings on this elevation have rectangular shaped profile of this side of the building.The windows have been filled inwith CMU masonry.At the capstones.The east and north facing parapets are lower and have a simple brick pattern with is in excellent condition.

NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES CONTINUATION SHEET 2900 Detroit Ave. Cleveland OH Cuyahoga County Statement of Significance: The Van Rooy Coffee Company building, erected in 1895, is eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places under Criteria A. The Van Rooy Coffee building is a prominent industrial building on Detroit Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio. Detroit Avenue is a major artery for Cleveland's public transportation, pedestrian and vehicular traffic. A mixture of industrial, commercial and residential buildings line the street. Van Rooy is located on the north side of the street to the east of a small park, and south of route 2 (previously Vermont Avenue).

The building is located in the northwestern portion of the Cleveland Landmarks Franklin Circle Historic District and adjacent to the Ohio City Historic District (NR 1974 & 1989). Buildings and structures within a one quarter mile radius that are listed on the national register include: The Superior Avenue Viaduct, NR 1974; The Detroit Superior High Level Bridge, NR 1974; St. John's Episcopal Church, NR 1973; the Ohio City Preservation District, NR 1974; the Forest City Bank Building 1905, NR 1992; and the Federal Knitting Mills 1906, NR 2001 (next door to the Van Rooy Coffee Building). For the past 108 years, the Van Rooy Coffee building has had a continuous industrial use that reflects Cleveland's diverse industrial base.

From 1895 to 1926 it housed the Cleveland Steel to 1935 Thompson Products later known as TRW (manufacturer of pistons for automobiles and airplane engine valves), and from 1935 until March 2003, the Van Rooy Coffee Company (coffee and spice processors). The building is a significant example of a Romanesque style industrial building. The building retains its original integrity. There have been a few minor changes to the exterior, including a new corner entrance door and a new door on West 29th Street. The interior of the factory has also had few changes. Cleveland was well located for the production of steel. The two main ingredients, iron ore and coal, were readily available. Iron ore was shipped to Cleveland from northern Minnesota after the opening of the Soo Canal in 1856. Coal was available from southern Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania by railroad.

Several local industries took advantage of the iron and steel that was manufactured here. The steel range manufacturers were one of these industries. The Tinnerman family was important in the development of the local steel range industry. They century. Henry Tinnerman came to America from Prussia in 1847, and opened a blacksmith and wagon shop at Lorain and Fulton in 1850. Out of this hardware business his son George A. Tinnerman began the manufacture of steel stoves in 1885 taking out a patent for an "Ohio Steel Range." A factory was open at 11-21 Willett Street (now 2038-2046 Fulton Road) in 1887. Henry F. Tinnerman, Henry's son and George's brother, was the President of Cleveland Steel Range. Cleveland Steel Range was incorporated in 1892 and through 1894 it was located in the flats next to the Cuyahoga River.

Van Rooy Coffee Company Building were one of several influential German-American families from the near west side in the late 19th Section number _ 8 Page - Range Company later known as Imperial Steel Range (manufacturer of steel ranges), from 1929 NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES Van Rooy Coffee Company Building 2900 Detroit Ave. Cleveland OH Cuyahoga County Detroit Avenue. In 1895 the Cleveland Steel Range Company moved to this newly completed factory building on the northwest corner of Detroit and State (now West 29t Street). This part of Detroit Avenue had been lined with single-family residences located near the Irish immigrant neighborhood known as the Angle. The commercial and industrial development occurred here without a direct link to the railroad. This is significant indication of the rapid expansion of the City during this period.

After the opening of the Superior Viaduct in 1876 and the trolley line along the street, it became with the rapid expansion of Cleveland's industrial base. Several large-scale industrial and commercial buildings were built on this section of Detroit Avenue: The 3-story Seymour Block 1876, 3-story Cleveland Steel Range 1895, the 4-1/2 story Detroit Block (now demolished) 1897, the 4-story Forest City Bank Building 1905, NR 1992; the 3-story Federal Knitting Mills 1906, NR 2001; and the 2-story Striebinger Block 1919 were all built on Detroit Avenue. The establishment of such buildings is a direct reflection of Cleveland's diverse industrial base. was still the President. William Tarnutzer, son-in-law of George A. Tinnerman, was president after Henry's death in 1912. The Imperial Steel Range remained in the building until 1926.

The company operated a manufacturing facility, warehouse and showroom from this location. Cleveland was the nation's second of automotive parts and supplier of parts for the aerospace industry. Thompson Products had been founded in 1901 as Cleveland Cap Screw, manufacturer of cap screws, on Clarkwood Street on the east side of Cleveland. Cleveland Cap Screw was purchased by Alexander Winton, automobile manufacturer, in 1905 and converted to manufacturing automotive valve stems. In 1908 the company became the Electric Welding Company and grew with the developing automobile industry.

The company became Thompson Products in 1915 with 600 employees and was the nation's leading maker of valves. During World War I, the company began to manufacture airplane engine valves and pistons. Cleveland OH Cuyahoga County Thompson Products contributed to expanding Cleveland's role in the aircraft industry. The Company's manufacturing facility at 2900 Detroit Avenue was the only location that manufactured the pistons for the Ford Motor Company's Tri-Motor Airplane. This airplane played a significant role in the history of aviation. The Tri-Motor airplane enabled commercial important events in the selling of aviation to the general public was the entry of Henry Ford into aircraft manufacturing. The Ford automobile was at the time the symbol of reliability, and it In 1929 the National Air Races came to Cleveland with help from Lois W. Greve and Frederick C. Crawford. Crawford was general manager of Thompson Products at the time. Thompson popular race during the National Air Race history.

The National Air Races became known as the Cleveland Air Races due to the success of the 1929 show. Thompson Products and Cleveland were able to host the event for 5 consecutive years. The Cleveland National Air show, which grew out of the Air Races, is still a major event in Cleveland. Thompson Products Company sold the building to The Van Rooy Coffee Company in 1935. The Van Rooy Coffee Company remained at this location until March 2003, when it relocated to a single story industrial building outside of Cleveland. Van Rooy Coffee was founded in 1930 by salesmen Anthony Van Rooy, Walter Kreinheder, Bret Pine, Owen Kelley sr., Jake Rose, and Van Rooy Coffee Company decided to use Van Roy as a product name and slowly phased out the double O from their product lines.

The official company name has remained The Van Rooy This also allowed for more room for graphics, which made the product more visible. The Van Rooy Coffee Company has provided coffee, teas and spices without interruption to the Cleveland area since its inception in 1930. They are a wholesale producer, retail distributor and coffee service company. Van Rooy Coffee sold their products to the Pittsburgh Steamship Lines (with over 100 ships on the Great Lakes), The May Company, and the Standard Drug Store chain. Further, Van Rooy distributed coffee, teas and spices to local grocery stores. They continue to provide coffee services to area restaurants and hotels with specialty blends such as the hotel blend and mocha java blends. After the First World War, vacuum-packed cans were introduced in mass quantities in the United States.

The introduction of the vacuum-packed coffee-can revolutionized the coffee industry. In the same way the beer industry was transformed by pasteurization, the vacuum packed coffee can devastated the local coffee roasting industry. In 1945, there were sixteen coffee companies located in Cleveland(including Cook Coffee and Edwards Coffee). In 2003, The Van Rooy Coffee Company was the only remaining local coffee roasting and canning company in Cleveland. The Van Rooy Coffee Company continually adapted to industry changes. They started to utilize vacuum packaging in 1936 at their 2900 Detroit Avenue location by packaging their DeKaffo blend (their decaffeinated coffee) in vacuum-sealed glass jars. In 1938 the Van Rooy Coffee Company was one of the first coffee roasting companies in Cleveland to introduce the coffee can.

Throughout the 1940's they introduced the coffee can in all of their brands. In the1950's the Van Rooy Coffee Company was under attack from national coffee brands over their retail and wholesale businesses. Van Rooy's response was to aggressively sell their coffee products to area businesses. This adaptability has allowed the company to survive and continue to provide retail, wholesale and coffee services to Cleveland area customers today. The Van Rooy Coffee Company building is a reminder of a time when local roasting companies were commonplace in the urban landscape. The building is an excellent example of the Romanesque style adapted for an industrial use. It is a simple example of the style that recalls features of H. H. Richardson's Marshall Field Wholesale Building in Chicago that was built between 1885 and 1887.

There are several significant local examples of Romanesque style commercial buildings. These include the Root and McBride Building 1884, the Western Reserve Medical School 1885-7 (demolished), the Society for Savings Bank 1889, and the Arcade 1890. The Romanesque style is derived from the round arched windows, the entrance and use of brick and sandstone as building materials, but it is basically a very simple design for the time of its construction in 1895. Industrial buildings constructed in the 1890's that have been inventoried include: The Cleveland Commercial Company at 1000 Harvard Avenue 1892, Cleveland Window Glass at 2406 Center Street 1892, the Pilsner Brewery 3110 West 6St* Street 1894, the Woodland Avenue and West Side The building was designed in 1894 by the firm of French and LaChance, a short-lived partnership that lasted about one year.

There are no other records of buildings designed by this firm. According to Cleveland City Directories, Alfred A. French was a member of the firm of A. A. and W. T. French in 1891, French & Chapman in 1893, French & LaChance in 1894, and was listed individually in 1895. In 1904, the Ohio Architect and Builder lists French as the architect of the Elberton and Beverly Apartment Buildings. Walter W. LaChance was listed for two years in Cleveland City Directories, in 1894 with the firm of French and LaChance, and individually in 1895. Alfred. A. French started his professional career in Toronto, Canada, where he constructed many churches and business blocks. Of the buildings that A.A. The structure is part of the locally designated Ohio City Historic District. There were too many blocks dominated by surface parking and newer (non-contributing structures) to make it part of the National Register District. I do believe the Van Rooy Coffee Company building is individually eligible, because it is a good example of an Memorial Shoreway.

The association with the Van Rooy Coffee Company is strong and the company billboard in the shape of a coffee can have been seen by thousands of commuters in their drive into downtown. Robert D.
