Main Street is a mixed commercial and residential street east, west and north sides the property is bounded by single-family homes. A small religious shrine is also located across the street to the north. The hospital building was constructed beginning in 1916 and remains on its original site with original fabric intact.

Schriber & Beelman Architects of Toledo, Ohio designed the (Original blue prints and blue prints of the additions are retained on site.) story wings with a 1 story Neo-Classical, gabled structure at each end of the wings. Each part of the structure is reflected pilasters on the building face. The entry has a curved, broken-pediment supported by wooden, columns with Ionic capitols flanking the door. The building also contains a basement level under the central and west wings. The windows throughout are wood, double hung with six-over-six panes. The gable wings feature cornice returns, porthole vents with molding in the gable ends and small louvered ventilating cupolas. The exterior masonry and concrete walls are painted. The structure is composed ofa formed and poured concrete foundation and floors.

The first floor and second floor walls are constructed of clay-tile masonry with a stucco exterior face and cement plaster interior finish The plans note that the building was constructed utilizing the Kahn System Building Products, created by Julius architect known for his innovative use of reinforced concrete materials in construction of buildings. The system utilizes steel and poured-in-place concrete to create an extremely strong and durable structure that requires little The interior spaces are largely in their original condition. The bed spaces are currently used as offices and meeting rooms for a variety of businesses. Original closets, cabinetry and nurses supply areas remain intact. The large central wards were combined into a single room sometime in the building's past. The basement kitchen is in original condition with much older equipment and cabinetry in place.

The other basement utility areas are in spaces were used for record storage and housing for doctors, the Hospital Matron and nursing staff. Peabody of Norwalk, Ohio. This addition follows the style and proportion of the original design. services to the surrounding area through its use as a multi-use facility. The design architect was Granville E. Scott of the firm. As the Huron county seat, Norwalk is a hub of activity and an important crossroads for the surrounding area. When it opened in 1916 Norwalk Memorial Hospital replaced smaller residential "clinic" type facilities that were operated by local physicians. It offered the community the option of local care for more serious surgeries or long convalescent stays.

Prior to the hospital's construction most serious surgeries were performed in Toledo or Cleveland, necessitating a long rail trip for an ailing patient. The first medical clinic/hospital was opened in 1886 or 1887 and was located at 1921 South Prospect Street. This was a private hospital facility operated by Marguerite Coe. It provided very limited care such as midwifery, broken bone setting and convalescence. Later in 1905, Dr. Ralph Morse operated a clinic in Norwalk at his house on South Linwood Street. This clinic served the Norwalk community by offering limited surgeries until the opening of the Norwalk Memorial Hospital. By the early 20t* century the town was in need of more modern hospital care and banded together to find a location for a new hospital.

The creation of the hospital was due largely to the charitable contribution of land by local widow and property owner Gertrude Underhill. Mrs. Underhill originally donated the 4.8 acre site to the local Catholic Priest for the construction of a new church. When the church was not built, the land became available to the City of Norwalk for construction of the new municipal hospital. Local contributions in the form citizens of Norwalk, Ohio. surrounding areas by providing a much-needed service to the residents of Norwalk and Huron County. The building provided the community with many health care options unavailable prior to its construction. The original building contained a maternity ward with private rooms as well as men's and women's wards. The laboratory and x-ray department for the hospital was considered very modern for its time.

In fact, the 1847 Norwalk Female Seminary building located at 114 W Main Street may very well have influenced the design of the hospital - the seminary has a similar overall scale, massing with Greek Revival details, and a centered gable front portico entrance. The Hospital building is located about two block west of West Main Street Historic District (NR 1974), which begins at 201 West Main Street. The residential neighborhood has many grand homes dating from the 1800s to neighborhood and home to the town's past leaders. examples of public buildings include the Norwalk Public Library, designed by Columbus architect Frank L. Packard in 1905 (included in the West Main Street Historic District, NR 1974); the Huron County Banking Co. 2004); and the Norwalk Post Office in 1932.

While the building's outward design and appearance draws upon historical classical revival details typical of the period; its construction reflects the innovative use of reinforced concrete being experimented with at the time. The building was constructed using Kahn System Building Parts from the Trussed Concrete Steel Company in The eldest son in the family, Albert Kahn made certain that his brothers' education was more complete than his. Julius (1874-1942), the closest to him in age, was educated in the Detroit public schools and received a B. S. and C.E. degree at the University of Michigan. From 1896 to 1900 he was an engineer for the U.S. Navy and later for the U.S sulphur mines.

Returning to Detroit in 1903, he became associated with his brother Albert early 1900s displaying examples of Greek Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne, Tudor Revival and Colonial The Neo-Classical Revival and Colonial Revival styles were popular in Norwalk in the early 2o"h century. The U.S. government then made a contract with him to use his form of reinforcement for the War College in Washington, Concrete Steel Company, of which he became president. Located in Youngstown, Ohio, it was later called the Truscon Steel Company until it was absorbed by the Republic Steel Company of Cleveland in 1935. The 38-bed Norwalk Memorial Hospital served the community and surrounding areas well until closing in 1957 when the new 100 bed Fisher Titus Hospital was opened. The City of Norwalk had grown consistently and communities. The Norwalk Memorial Hospital later served as a nursing home and now houses private offices for several types of businesses.
