Description of the property

The Slade Spice Mill, situated on the Mill Creek, a tributary of the Chelsea River, extends into the water southwest from the land, with the street entrance on the northeast side. Here there is an open space originally paved for the use of wagons and now used for trucks. Beyond the narrow southwest end of the building, the dam, now greatly reduced in size by storms, extends across Mill Creek. Revere Beach Parkway is about 25 feet to the northeast. The dam is rapidly deteriorating and it, in conjunction with the Mill Pond, is no longer used as a power source. The large mill building, in excellent condition, is still used to grind and mix spices. This is not the original building. The first structure, a grist mill, was constructed on this site c. 1734, destroyed in 1795 and cebuilt c. 1823. It was burned in 1885, 1901 and 1902, each time rebuilt on the same spot.

Some of the early timbers evidently were re-used as there is evidence of charring in existing interior supports. The pre-1901 structures were two stories high and originally there were only two mill water wheels (turbines) as versus the later four. The three story building is divided into two sections by a brick fire wall which extends across its entire width. The main section where the grinding and mixing takes place is 33 feet by 85 feet; the storage section, 27 feet by 45 feet, is located on the land end to the northeast. In the northeast corner of the main area is an interior elevator, capped by a small enclosure above roof level: The frame building is covered by wooden shingles with asphalt shingles on the elongated hip roof. narrow southwest end of the main building, facing the water, is two bays wide while on either side are seven bays.

There is a narrow two story projection about eight feet wide which is attachedto the northwest facade of the main processing area. It begins a few feet beyond the fourth bay and extends north to the fire wall. On the northwest facade the storage area has two windows on the third floor level, the remainder now covered with a large sign. The opposite, northeast facade, facing downstream, has a sliding door on the first floor, one window on the second and a window and door on the third. This latter door was once equipped with a pulley whereby supplies were lifted for storage. There are no windows on the land end. Large sections of the wooden floors on both the first and second floor levels are stained dark from nutmeg oil to a depth of several inches where the nutmeg was shelled and crushed, giving the wood a fine dark finish.

The dam which enclosed the Mill Pond extends from the southwest end of the mill building across Mill Creek about 200 feet. It is constructed of planks laid against pilings, over which is dirt fill and then granite rocks. About 30 feet wide formerly, the dam starts beyond a twelve foot tidal sluiceway at the point the tide enters the pond adjacent to the mill. In the past the floor of the sluiceway was lined with non-absorbent African mahogany, "ironwood, " to prevent tidal currents from scouring the bottom, which would have allowed water to escape under the closed sluice gates. The walls of the sluiceway are formed by large cut granite blocks, originally unmortared; the northwest wall supports the narrow, water end of the building.

Description About eight feet toward land from this vertical granite foundation is another like it, beyond which the building is supported by parallel rows of pilings running across the narrow width from northwest to southeast about six feet apart. Surmounting the granite supports and pilings are ten inch oak timbers on which the stringers are laid. The Mill Pond was filled by the action of tidal currents opening the tidal sluice gates as the tide came in and closing them as the tide began to ebb. The cellar, open downstream, contained the four water wheels which ran the stones of the mill.

The blades of these horizontal wheels, shaped like small propellers and encased in upright wooden cylinders, were activated by the force of water released by raising a small gate from the filled Mill Pond. The wheels, originally wooden and later replaced with specially cast iron, turned gears above by means of a drive shaft, which then turned the mill stones. Obviously this power source was intermittent, available for only six or seven hours out of twelve. One set of cast iron gears, also originally wooden, installed beside a set of mill stones, still exists today. Below at cellar level, one casing, possibly the only one extant on the Atlantic Coast, can still be seen at low tide though the water wheel it covered is gone. The remains of a wheel that raised and lowered the gates of the mill run still exist on the first floor, sluiceway side.

The gears that manipulated the draw- bridge over the sluiceway, allowing the Chelsea workers to return home across the Mill Creek, are not original but are very similar to those that were there. SNOIL U > Z -

Statement of significance

The Slade Spice Mill in Revere is one of the two remaining mills in Massa- chusetts which were tide powered; the other is now inoperative and rebuilt as a residence. The D. & L. Slade Spice Company, the oldest producing spice company in the United States, began operations on this site in 1827 under the management of Henry Slade who first ground only corn and snuff. Ten years later Henry's sons, David and Levi, instigated the grinding of cinnamon which they delivered in barrels to local housewives and later to grocers in Boston. This proved so popular that the company expanded into grinding and packaging all spices. While the grinding and mixing still takes place in the Revere mill, in later years the packaging has been done in the Slade Company's Boston headquarters on State Street. The prosperous company was owned and operated by a member of the Slade family for nearly 150 years.

Only recently has an outsider taken over the presidency. The location, first used as a mill site in 1734 for grinding corn, was intrinsic to the operation of the mill by providing the tide which supplied the mill with power. The Slade Company used this means of operation until c. 1930 (by then combined with electrical power), unusually late for this type of mill. The engineering significance of the Slade Mill lies in the fact that it used one of the earliest of the horizontal (turbine) water wheels, powered by the release of dammed water and depending on tidal action which allowed the mill stones to move during a part of each day. A few original parts of the machinery remain in the mill today, evidently having escaped the many fires. (see Physical Appearance statement) The military significance of the Slade Spice Mill is rather indirect.
