Description of the property

The 1767 Milestones, among which is the Roxbury Parting Stone, marked mile intervals along the Old Post Road from Boston to Springfield. Forty of these stones, or their replacements, have been located. The siting of the stones varies. A major- ity are set atthe edge of state routes between the road and private property. A few are set on privately owned lawns, and five, imbedded in concrete, are incorporated in walls and a monument. The stones east of Worcester County are granite; those in Worcester and Hampden Counties are gray or brown sandstone. Except for the few which are fragments, these round-headed or rectangular monoliths range from approximately one foot ten inches to five feet in above-ground height; from approximately eighteen inches to three feet wide; and from four inches to over a foot in depth.

Most öf the stones carry a simple three to four line inscription: " number / Mile (or Miles) From/ BOSTON;" "number / Mile (or Miles) From BOSTON/ number to Springfield;" BOSTON/ number Miles/ date / initial. " Those in the present city of Boston which were erected by Paul Dudley bear his initials and are dated. The most un interesting of these stones is the "Parting Stone". The inscription on the main (south- east) side reads "THE/PARTING/STONE/1744/ P. Dudley;" the southwest side is in- M scribed "DEDHAM/ & RHODE/ISLAND;" and thenortheast side "CAMBRIDGE/ WATERTOWN." Originally the stone held an iron shaft which supported a street lamp; this has been removed. The milestone set in Harvard Square now stands in the Old Burial Ground in Cambridge. The inscription on one face reads "BOSTON/ 8 miles/ 1734/ A.I.

" while on the opposite face is cut "Cam bri(dge)/ New Brid(ge)/ 2 1/4 Miles/ J794. " Replacements in Sudbury have on them modern directions in paint. In general, the condition of the milestones is good. Nearly all stones have retained C their original shapes except for the two fragments and two which have been broken into two pieces. A majority of the incised inscriptions are clear or legible. In some cases a few letters have been worn or chipped away and on four stones the inscription has been obliterated by weathering, or is so faint as to be illegible. In order to pre- serve the stones from destruction by highway construction or neglect, many stones have been moved short distances away from the road or onto private property. The Massachusetts Department of Public Works, under Chapter 621 of the Acts of 1960, has been directed to preserve the Milestones.

Statement of significance

The placing of the 1767 Milestones on the Old Post Road from Boston to Spring- field marks an important step in the history of American transportation. It was the executive action of the Lords of Trade and Plantations, followed by legislative action in Parliament (Geo. III, 5, Ch. 25) which directed Massachusetts and the other colonies to survey their post roads. This the Province did by Chapter 275 of the Resolves of the Political Year 1764, "provided that the whole of the expense do not exceed two hundred pounds." In 1767, on the 8th of July, the Honorable the Council advised his Excellency the Governor that the Secretary write to the Justices of cer- tain counties directing that the mile marks of Captain Miller's survey of roads be preserved by fixing stones at the said marks.

This was done from Boston to Spring- field, sometimes using existing stones, set earlier by Chief Justice Paul Dudley among others. Thus a road policy, already existing in part, was strengthened by combi combined British and American action. These stones have been the subject of subsequent historic interest. The Works Progress Administration located and described them in 1940, and published its findings in 1941 in Milestones and Markers in Massachusetts. In 1960, the Massa- chusetts Legislature, by Chapter 621 of the Acts of that year, directed the Depart- ment of Public Works to preserve the milestones. Much effort by the Department of Public Works has located and photographed forty of the original ninety-nine milestones; the Department is now securing protective easements on those stones not on state highways. 21 RECEIVED 13) MAR 11 1971 NATIONAL J4L151 TET REGISTER 18

Murtagh, Keeper of the National Register Office of Archeology and Historic Preservation National Park Service, Department of the Interior 801 19th Street, N.W. Washington, D. D. 20006 Dear Bill: This is to confirm our conversation of yesterday about locating our 1767 Milestones on the Old Post Road for National Register sub- mission.

We agreed that with 39 or 40 of the original 99 now located and more surfacing from time to time that latitudes and longitudes of each stone would be a waste of time, since there are adequate prac- tical locations on file. This, you felt, was analagous to the problems of the Lewis and Clark Trail. We shall therefore record the location of the Parting Stone in Roxbury, and Stone 99 in Springfield, and treat the mile stones as a district, between these two termini. As for my problems about locating National Landmarks, I shall take these up directly with the Historic Sites Survey. Thanks for your help. Duh Richard W.
