() Mr William Murtaugh Keeper of the National Register National Park Service U S Dept of Interior 801 19th St NW Room 616 Washington DC 20006 Dear Bill You will soon have on your desk an application for registery status for Gloucester City Hall, 1869-71 by Gridley James Fox Bryant and Iouis Rogers, a fine example of the merger in this _country after the Civil Was of English Victorian and French Second Empire styles. The work of one of the most prominent architects in New England, City Hall has been the focus of the pol- itical life of this fishing town for over a century. There is no doabt that City Hall rates recogni- tion and inclusion in the National Register. It would be pleasant if it could receive that distinction this year, the 350th anniversary, of the first settlement of the place and the 100th anniversary of its incorpora- tion as a city.
Gloucester City Hall looms prominently above the city's skyline in a series of landscape views by major American artists including Winslow Homer, John Sloan, John Iwachtman, #rank Duveneck, William Morris Hunt. and others. Ihis Cape Ann Historical Association wilJ this summer (25 July to 5 September) hold an exhibition of the local works of these men entitled PORTRAIT OF A PLACE: SOME AMERICAN LANDSCAPE PAINTERS IN GLOUCESTER. If you're in the area don't miss it. Let me know when you are coming and I'll roll out the red carpet. I would appreciate it if you would goose the City Hall application along- Cordially, James F O'Gorman 20 April 1973 JAMES F. 01930 April 4, 1973 Massachusetts Historical Commission 40 Beacon Street Boston, Massachusetts 02108 Attention: Mrs. George F. Amadon Re: Request for recording of Gloucester City Hall in the National Register Dear Mrs. Amadon: The Gloucester Historical Commission, at its regular monthly meeting on 3 April, 1973, instructed me to communicate to the Massachusetts His- torical Commission its desires that your office exercise all due dispatch in accomplishing the task of having Gloucester's City Hall placed in the National Register. Because of the rather swift nature that events occur in this day and age, and because Gloucester is, this year, celebrating its 350th Anni- versary, the Commission would feel greatly relieved if it knew that one of Gloucester's finest pieces of period architecture was preserved for posterity.
We feel that the existing favorable mood of the City and the present opportunity for accomplishing the listing in the National Register bodes well for the Commission. We do, therefore, again request that this project be moved forward at early date. yours very tpuly, Kates, Julian Hatch, Chairman Gloucester Historical Commission JH:eli RECElVED NATIONAL REGISTER 12 0II/16118 Johen F.
