DESCRIPTION CONDITION (Check One) Excellent Good Fair Deteriorated Ruins Unexposed (Check One) Altered Unaltered (Check One) Moved Original Site DESCRIBE THE PRESENT AND ORIGINAL (if known) PHYSICAL APPEARANCE Exterior: Built of hand-hewed logs circa 1800 by David Deardurf, this two story house rests on a limestone foundation. It measures approximately thirty feet by fifteen feet, and is four bays by two bays. In general, the roof, siding and addition on the East side are not original. The East side lean-to was added circa 1860, but it is uncertain as to when the siding was added to the house. Thus, the original house was rectilinear, and its exterior was no doubt exposed logs. First floor features include the recessed door embrasure on the North side. The door is not original.
Rectangular, double-hung sash windows, have been added sometime during the life of the house. It is not known what type of windows were originally employed. The exterior above the first floor contains additional windows and the eaves have received a simple treatment in the form of box cornice. Roofing material presently consists of asphalt shingles which are in fair condition. The general condition of the exterior is fair. The present owners have not had the building into a better state of repair. Interior: The interior is in fair condition. Floors are constructed of oak and ash planks. Plaster has been added to the interior walls which originally consisted of exposed logs. The first floor consists of two rooms in the original part. The woodwork is of oak with dove-tailed joints. It is likely that this woodwork was added during the late Nineteenth Century.
The second floor houses two bedrooms. The Sells, who are the present owners, are attempting to restore the house to its original condition. Mr. Sells plans to remove the lean-to on the East side and to repair the roof. The interior will be cleaned, and the early alterations will be removed. When the Sells purchased the house and lot in 1962, they prevented the building from being razed, and the site being converted into a parking lot. Unfortunately, the Sells cannot devote full-time to the restoration, and the building is again in danger of being razed. It deserves recognition as one of Franklinton's early landmarks. 8.

Its founder and surveyor was Lucas Sullivant. Sullivant, eager to have the area grow quickly, laid out many free parcels of land on a street he called "Gift Street". Many settlers came to Franklinton and the earliest were given land upon which to build houses. The Deardurff family was among the earliest settlers of Franklinton and they received free land on Gift Street. David Deardurff built this house for himself in 1807. It was in the front room of the Deardurff home that the first post office in Franklinton was established. Since the nearest post office was in Chillicothe, a treacherous three day ride over a crude forest trail was necessary to bring the mail to Franklinton. The first mail courier was Andrew McElvain, a boy thirteen years of age. But despite the hazards and the age of McElvain, the mail went through successfully once per week.
Over the years the house has had many occupants. As Franklinton was annexed and gradually was overshadowed by Columbus, the neighborhood in which the house stands decayed into slums. It is surrounded by old homes and commercial eyesores. The Sells purchased the house on April 9, 1962 in an effort to save it from being razed. Unfortunately the Sells have been less than successful in their venture. On September 13, 1972 the City of Columbus declared the house "unfit for human habitation." Now an effort must be made to publicly recognize this early log house and first post office in Franklinton. Its historic significance alone is enough to qualify its placement on the National Register of Historic Places. RECEIVED MAR 6 1973 NATIONAL REGISTER 9.
