Abutting it on the southerly tip is the former firehouse at 20 Eustis Street. Surrounding the entire ground is a pudding stone wall with a granite cap and cast- iron gate, erected in 1856. A later short iron fence has been set on top of the granite cap. Paths are laid out in a meandering fashion among the irregularly laid stones, tombs, and mature trees. Unlike other historic cemeteries in Boston, few of the stones were rearranged in the 19th century's quest for symmetry and precision. The tombs are organized in two ranges, ten in the ground's center which are the oldest, and along the brodering wall twenty-seven more below grade of which three have large horizontal monuments over the graves. In 1882, a bronze tablet was placed on the entrance gate to commemorate famous people within.

The former firehouse, Italianate in style, is two story, red brick, one bay wide by 3 bays long with an early wood frame addition that extends the building by two full bays plus a small "ell". The roof is pitched with gable end to streets. Small brackets support the overhanging cornice which does not have complete return; at the corners it is supported by pairs of elaborate, elongated brackets. On the facade, the ground floor engine door is marked by rusticated granite blocks in a segmental arch pattern. Immediately above two narrow round head windows flank a slightly larger similarly shaped window. Each has granite sills supported on small brackets and rusticated granite window caps. Along the sidewalls, plain windows have plain granite sills and lintels.

Statement of significance

Eliot Burying Ground was the first in Roxbury, established just after the town's incorporation in 1630 from the common land, and remains one of Boston's oldest cemeteries. Roxbury was annexed to Boston in 1868. The significance of Eliot Buryinges from its early establishment, the funerary art, and from those buried there. The first tomb built in the burying ground is that of the Dudley family, built before 1653./ Buried here are tovernorhomasudley, as well as Chiet ustice paulDudley, and Governor Joseph Dudyey, who errected the famous, hundred-odd mile- stones in Norfolk County. The oldest headstone is that of Sameul Danforth's infant of 1653. The most famous, and third tomb, is the Parish or Eliot Tomb, built in 1687 in which are the remains of John Eliot, Apostle to the Indians, Biblical translator, and minister of the 1st Church in Roxbury.

Other ministers of this early congregation are also buried in the Parish Tomb. During the siege of Boston, the first defensive work constructed by the Americans was a redoubt thrown up across Washington Street (then Roxbury Street) and Eustis Street (then Dorchester-Street) and called Burying Ground Redoubt. It was subsequently enlarged and strengthened. and 18th century and most are. in relatively intact condition. The funerary art illustrates vividly the Puritan concepts of death and immortality in the slate and stone markers which show winged death's heads or angels atop oblong stones. The more restrained imagry of urns and willows on post-revolutionary markers reflects the contemporary vogue in the decorative arts and architecture for classical motifs.

Neoclassicism of the Federal and later periods was a consious attempt to recreate the forms - political and artistic - of the earliest democracy, Greece, and, later, the original republic, Rome. In 1819, the Town of Roxbury voted to build "a house for the Engine" on a corner of the burying ground "where the Hearse House" stood. In 1856 older walls were replaced by the present granite wall and iron gates, ,85g and three years later, the wooden engine house was replaced by the existing brickfire house which forms part of the burying ground's southeastern border.
