The fieldstone section is rectang- ular in plan and is two stories in height, with its long sides on an east-west axis. The north, or front elevation of the stone section contains a centrally placed door flanked by two double hung windows. The second floor of the north facade has three equally spaced double-hung windows. The east and west elevations, being the shorter ends, contain no windows or openings.
The first story of the sou south elevation is approximately two-thirds covered by the one story frame addition.. The exposed one third of the ground floor elevation contains one double-hung window. The second story of the south elevation contains three equally spaced double hung windows. The roof of the stone section is of a straight gable construction with a six or seven to twelve pitch. Two fieldstone chimneys extend about three feet above the ends of the gable ridge. The building was constructed with end chimneys and a central hall plan and as such,is a typical colonial dwelling. Except for the vertical placement of stone above the windows, the building is without ornamentation or embellis- ment.. This building illustrates the functional severity of early American architecture.
Its foundation and walls are,constructed of local stone: easily obtainable and strong enough to withstand the rigors of the early 19th century Ohio' wilderness. The stone walls are as plumb today as the day they were laid up. The second section of Stonehurst is a frame section added to the south side of the fieldstone section. Because of its relatively recent construction (denoted by its concrete block foundation) it is of little significance to this nomination. It is to be dismantled during the planned restoration of the original stone building. 8.

The deed for the land was signed by John Adams and Plymouth Pickering. He first built a log cabin on the premises, but in 1816 he completed construction of "Stonehurst", a more permanent, stone residence. In a petition dated January 10, 1799, the inhabitants of the then county of Hamilton, asked Arthur St. Clair, Governor of the Northwest Territory, to appoint Alexander Martin as Justice of the Peace. This appointment was apparently made as Alexander's name appears in the minutes of subsequent territorial courts as a presiding magistrate. The Martin farm was one of the first to be established in this region of the Ohio valley, predating even many of the river towns along this particular stretch of the Ohio River. Settled by a Revolutionary War veteran, the early owners of the farm have played a significant role in the history of the area.
There is also significance in the fact that the property has never left the Martin family. The present owners are direct descendants of Alexander Martin. Alexander's grave, on the property, is marked for the federal government by the Daughters of the American Revolution. The Martin Family cemetery is located approximately 250 feet directly east of Stonehurst. Besides Alexander Martin, his wife and one son; are also buried here in adjacent graves.
