DESCRIPTION CONDITION (Check One) Excellent Good Fair Deteriorated Ruins Unexposed (Check One) Altered Unaltered (Check One) Moved Original Site DESCRIBE THE PRESENT AND ORIGINAL (if known) PHYSICAL APPEARANCE The two-story, frame Sunbury Tavern, built in 1804, is reputed to be the first frame building constructed in Sunbury.
Many changes have been made over the years and the roofline suggests that two early buildings may have been combined. Built on a stone foundation, the front (east) side has a "southern-style" two-story porch. The original siding was clapboard except on the east side where flush siding was used. The building is presently covered with shingles. The porch columns are spaced irregularly and the original ones were gracefully turned from solid logs. The lower columns have been replaced with square, brick ones. The windows are not original. There are fanlights in the north and south gables. The cornice and frieze are well executed and closely correspond to, though simplified, plate XXXV in Asher Benjamin's The Architect, or Practical House Carpenter. The gable roof is metal with interior end chimneys on the north, south, and west gable ends. On the interior much black walnut is used.
The second floor was divided into small rooms by means of removable partitions. These could be removed for gala occasions when a dance floor was needed. The tavern, now used as a rooming house, is in need of attention and repair. RECEIVED DEC 11 1974 NATIONAL REGISTER 8.

The tavern, built during the days of stagecoach travel, had some distinguished guests during the nineteenth century - Henry Clay made a speech from the second floor porch and Presidents Hayes and Harrison were overnight visitors. Sunbury is located in Berkshire township which was organized in 1806. The town of Sunbury was not laid out until 1816. The tavern was one of the earliest in Delaware county, and likely the first public building in the area. The tavern is featured in I. T. T*fary's Early Homes of Ohio as an example of an Ohio tavern which has a decidedly "southern" atmosphere. In appearance it is very much like the Buxton Inn; built in 1812 in Licking County, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Sunbury Tavern is now known as the Hopkins House, a boarding house. It is an excellent example of an early frame tavern building and quite rare in Ohio.
*Minnie Hite Moody, a local writer-historian, says that the architect, Benjamin of Boston, was reportedly the designer for both the Buxton Inn and the Sunbury Inn.
