Statement of significance

In September of 1825 a meeting convened which formed the Portland Library, Association and public library. By 1867 the Young Men's Christian Association established a circulating library in a room over the Moss National Bank. However, it was not until 1870, when 12 to raise funds for a library building. On January 15, 1896, the Library Building Fund was on the corner of Columbus Avenue and:Adams St. was obtained fnom Mr. and Mrs. Woolworth. On October 7, 1899 Andrew Carnegie gave $50,000 for a public library building and its equipment, the only condition being that a site should be furnished and that the city two architects, Albert D'Oench and Joseph Warren Yost (1842-1923) did together. Yost officially started working with D'Oench on January 1, 1901 and previously had worked with Frank Packard from 1898-1900 in Columbus, Ohio.
