The Massachusetts put the Jean Bart out of action with five direct hits. No- casualties were reported on the U.S. ship, although it sustained several hits. Oddly enough, the Mas- sachusettsnot only fired the first big naval shot of the Second World War but also the last! Assigned to the Pacific theatre: of war, the bat- tleship took, part in many operations and raids between 1943 and 1945. It fired the last recorded 16- inch shell of World War II at the Japanese island of Honshu.
