The double townhouse was constructed for Seth Hunt and his son David. Seth was treasurer of the Connecticul River Railroad for thirty-five years. The four structures in the Maple-Union Corners District illustrate the changes taking place in Springfield in the late nineteenth century.
Real estate values had risen so that it was no longer practical to own large frontage on Maple Street, resulting in the change from the detached houses on the east side to the building of town- houses on the west side. The district further offers a lesson in the nineteenth century development in architectural expression through a comparison of the two sides of the district.
