Description of the property

The Chatham Windmil1 is located in Chase Park on a small hill above Mill Pond in the southeastern corner of Chatham. The Windmill is a three-story octangonal structure with a rotating cap. The sides of the mill taper in to the cap which has a ridge and cambered sides. The blades are attached at one gable and the peak by tail pole extends from the other gable. The entire structure is sheathed in shingles. There are entrances on two sides; one to the north and one to the south. There are two small windows on the second floor. The blades are a simple rectangular grid and are fitted with two sails each to regulate the velocity. On the ground floor is the stone wheel powered by the blades. The mill was originally built in 1797 and much of the fabric of the existing structure is original. Wearing parts, such as gears, have been replaced periodi- cally.

Some of the structure has been replaced during restorations in 1956 and 1977. Both times the work was competently and professionally carried out, con- serving as much of the existing fabric as allowable and avoiding wholesale re- placement.

Statement of significance

/ARCHITECT Col. Benjamin Godfrey The Chatham Windmill is significant as one of the few surviving wind-powered grist mill in operating condition. The Windmill was the principal grist mill in Chatham throughout the 19th century. The Windmill was built by Colonel Benjamin Godfrey in 1797, whose family continued to own it until the end of the Civil War. The mill passed hands several times but re- mained in use until a gale storm in 1907 destroyed the top of the shaft and arms. In 1908 it was again put back in use and it remained so until 1916. In 1929 another storm tipped the cap, wrecking the trundle and blades again. In 1955 the Windmill was donated to the Town of Chatham by Stuart Crocker. At that time it was moved from its original location on Stage Harbor to its present site. The Town maintains the Windmill as a museum and employes a miller who continues to grind corn.
