Description of the property

The Capron House is located on a third of an acre in an older residential neighborhood of Attleboro. The house is sited close to the street and separated from the roadway by a simply landscaped apron and low stone wall. Much of the original front yard was taken for an electric trolley right-of- way in the early 20th century. The 2'½ story house has a ridge roof with gables to the side and two dissimilar end chimneys. There is a one story ell on the south elevation. The house is sheathed in cedar shingles. The 6/6 fenestration throughout is framed by a simple flat architrave. Windows on the second story of the facade and rear elevation are placed directly below the simple molded cornice. The six bay wide facade faces east across North Avenue. The raised panel door of the center entry is flanked by pilaster and crowned by a five light transom.

Above this is a shallow projecting triangular pediment with dentil course. The main house is 36x26'. The ell is 21x14'. The interior features wide pine floorboards, corner posts with beaded casings and horizontal wainscoting. The chimneys were rebuilt in 1876; the clapboarding has been covered by the cedar shingles. A carriage shed attached to the ell was destroyed by the great hurricane of 1938. The original farm consisted of over 200 acres.

Statement of significance

/ARCHITECT The Capron House is significant as an 18th century house and for its associations with the Capron family, an important Attleboro family who owned the house for over 200 years. Banfield Capron, one of the original Attleboro settlers, gave each of his children a farm of 200 acres. One of his children built this house. One colorful owner in the 19th century, Joseph Willard Capron, kept a journal of events associated with this property, the sur- rounding area and the family. The journal included an inventory of all standing wood, hay, ornamental trees, even cranberries stolen from the property- 9
