Description of the property

Union Trust Company is located in the commercial center of Springfield and is sur- rounded by, structures from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. To the north, across Townsley Avenue, is the Republican Block (NR nomination) and across Main Street, to the southeast, is the Court Square Historic District (NR). The Mattoon-Quadrangle Historic District is two blocks east. The Union Trust Company was built in 1907-08 and designed by the nationally prominent Boston architectural firm of Peabody and Stearns. The Beaux Arts style structure is two stories high with a mezzanine level. The facade and a small portion of the Townsley Avenue elevation are faced with limestone on a low base of Tennessee marble. The remainder of the Townsley Avenue elevation and the rear elevation are constructed of yellow brick and relieved by limestone detail.

The major component of the design and principal feature of the facade is the triumphal arch motif. This slightly recessed arch is framed by rusticated piers set on a six foot high water table. Loop windows pierce the piers at the first and second floors. The arch spandrels are ornamented by a high relief figure of a recumbent woman attended by a putto. These panels were sculpted by John Evans of Boston. The soffit of the arch is coffered. Recessed seven feet within the arch is a glazed screen with center entry. The projecting cornice of the monumental scaled entry is supported by consoles and surmounted by a cartouche flanked by baskets. The roofline is distinguished by a full Corinthian entablature. The frieze is orna- mented with rinceaux and putti on the ends. "Union Trust Company" is inscribed in the center.

Above the entablature is a parapet wall with projecting panels and balustrades. In the center is a round arched panel topped by an acorn finial. The panel is ornamented by a cartouche framed by swags. The corner of the facade and Townsley Avenue elevation is bevelled and panelled. The Townsley Avenue elevation is six bays deep and has full round arched fenestration on the first floor with paired jack arched lintel fenestration on the second floor. There is a projecting limestone course at the impost of the arch of the first floor fenestration. The rear elevation is three bays wide. The end bays have brick courses arranged in rustication with single jack arched lintel fenestration on the first and second floors. The central bay has a large scale full round arched window and paired jack lintel windows on the second floor.

The 6' high water table of the facade is reflected on the rear in the continuous limestone sill. The only change in the exterior is the replacement of the original doors and windows of the first floor. The openings have been blocked down for the new aluminum sash fixtures.

Statement of significance

/ARCHITECT Peabody and Stearns The Union Trust Company is significant for its architecture, associations with banking history in Springfield, and in the development of the city center. Peabody and Stearns was a nationally recognized architectural firm whose work stretches across the entire range of architectural use and expression. Their only known work in the Connecticut Valley are two buildings at Smith College (1875 and 1890); the Union Trust Company (1907-08); the Springfield Fire and Marine Insurance Company (1904); and a church (1878). Architecturally, the Beaux Arts design of the Union Trust Company relates to the Munincipal Group (Courthouse Square Historic District NR) and would have comple- mented a projected early 20th century Burnham-esque "City Beautiful" proposal for the area and riverfront. The Union Trust Company was founded in 1906 when three banks merged.

One of the three, Second National Bank, began business in 1814 as the Springfield Bank; it was the first bank in the area. In 1958 Union Trust merged with the Springfield National Bank to form the Valley Bank. This structure served as the corporate headquarters until 1970. Union Trust Company is the finest Beaux Arts structure on Main Street and has been referred to locally as "that gem of Main Street architecture." 9
