Further Description of Important Features Lock is mitered gate type. The lock chamber is 90 feet long by 15 feet wide. The cut stone construction is masked by a cover of concrete that was applied c. 1905. Both gates remain intact. Photo of spillway, over. 3. History and Significance County historian Crisfield Johnson has written: "The Ohio Canal was located through Independence township in 1825, William H. Price being the resident engineer. Two years later it was opened for travel. It is on the east Cuyahoga, and has in the township a length of about seven miles, with four locks, numbered from thirty-seven to forty inclusive." Locks No. 37-3 re.preset the best preserved section of the canal between Akron and Cleveland. 4. Description of Environment and Outbuildings Rural valley setting.
