Statement of significance

James Nicholson (1783-1859) was born in Barnstable, Massachusetts. His he emigrated to Trumbull County, Ohio, where he was married. In 1818 Nicholson participated in the first election, and was appointed overseer of the poor. In 1826 he built a frame house in another location on Detroit erected at Nicholson Avenue in 1835. Nicholson studied the work of Emmanuel Swedenborg, the 18th century Swedish philosopher and religious writer. The First Society of Rockport, based on church until his death in 1859. Some ten years later, his widow made important early settlers, but also a remarkable survival of the early 19th century in its original location, which is now a commercial intersection and four photos of the house.
