Further Description of Important Features This house was once quite similar to the Captain Rae House (ERI 401 R12) but has been altered. Of interest are the brackets and the elaborate cornice and the iron balustrade which surmounts the building. Shingle siding was added to the exterior, and the front porch and some small wings have been added. The interior has been adapted into use for a nursing home. 43. History and Significance This was an old hotel which served east-west traffic traveling through Vermilion. An excellent example of the large-scale Italianate architecture on frame common to Vermilion. 44. Description of Environment and Outbuildings This house occupies a large lot and features shade trees and shrubbery. It is located on the western edge of the business district. 45. They continue to use the N.R. format with a not just, but fail about the intact historic setting. Many of the statements of significance leave a lot to be desired. I have separated the ones that are especially poor. Cole - Discuss with state Braham 10.22.79 ARCHEOLOGIST - Discussed with state. While some of the N.R. components are on the weak side, I guess I can accept based on state assurances that there are the eligible resources & that the N.R. format is the best approach.
