It consists of a two room deep main block flanked by small one story ells. Its symmetrical five bay facade is organized around the center entry which is headed by a projecting cornice. Facade sash Is headed by a protec (6/9) and the entry are the result of a 1930's remodeling. Notable features in this house include fine raised-field paneling and a handsome Georgian stairway with a turned balustrade. An arched chimney base, over 1l feet long, supports two fireplaces on each side of the large chimney.

The interior and exterior of the house was extensively restored in the HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) The Heard-Lakeman House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship and significant associations with Ipswich's early development. Nathaniel and John Heard bought this land in 1776 (135:262) and built the present house for Nathaniel, a cordwainer. Nathaniel sold the house to Richard Lakeman III in 1795 (168:44) and it is still remembered as the Lakeman house. The Lakemans were a seafaring family. They owned a fishing fleet and traded with the West Indies. This house is subject to preservation easements, under terms of a preservation agreement between the owner and the lpswich historical Commission.

Together with the Burnham-Patch House (form #166), Heard-Lakeman occupies a strategic location, anchoring the south end of Turkey Shore Rd., an ancient riverside way. The work included installing reproduced front windows and a door, cornice moldings and a mantel. The east front room gained a reproduced summer beam, and a pair of period two panel doors another house.

Boards from a partition in this room were used to sheath the fireplace wall, and paneling was introduced from another building on the site.
