While its core, including timber frame, is 17th Century, its present appearance dates to the mid-18th Century. The five bay symmetrical facade is centered around the entry which is framed by pilasters and a projecting entablature and headed by a rectangular transom. The overhanging cornice is supported by carved modillions.
The Calef House is significant as a representative First Period house with high quality Second Period alterations. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) Deacon Thomas Knowlton bought 3/4 of an acre from Goodman Younglove in 1671 and built this house on South Main St. John Heard acquired it in 1777 and moved it to land he owned on Poplar St. He then built a pretentious Federal period mansion in 1795 on the old site (Area J#41) facing South Green. Dr. John Calef, a noted Tory who appeared in Paul Revere's famous broadside, "A Warm Place Hell," lived in the house before Heard purchased it. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES T.F.
