Welden Organization Ipswich Historical Commission Date October 1978 Assessor's lot # 117-H JUL 1 1980 UTM Reference: 19/349580/4726480 (Staple additional sheets here) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community) The Benjamin Grant House is a 2 1/2 story end-gable structure with a large cen- tral chimney. It consists of a one room deep front section with a rear lean-to. Its five bay facade is slightly asymmetrical. Despite the alteration of asbestos siding, it is an excellent example of an early eighteenth century house which retains many of its original features.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) The Benjamin Grant possesses integrity of location, design, setting and work- manship and significant associations with the early development of Ipswich. Benjamin Grant bought this land in 1735_(71:128) and built his house. Grant, a corporal, was killed in the French and Indian War in 1756. Joseph Ross, an old Revolutionary War soldier, bought the house in 1784, and it remained in his family until the mid-20th century. Much of the original finish remains visible in the house and it is likely that more survives hidden behind the walls. One chamber chimney wall has an unusual combination of feather-edge panelling at the sides and raised field panelling over the fireplace. The central chimney was rebuilt above the roof level in 1978.
