It consists of a rectangular plan front section with a large rear ell containing two entries facing south. The facade of the front section is five bays and symmetric alley organized around a center entry. The entry is framed by pilasters and headed by a rectangular transom. It is one of Ipswich's best preserved examples of early 18th Century architecture.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) The Burnham-Patch House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship and significant associations with Ipswich's early development. Thomas Burnham bought this property in 1667 (11:26) and built a house shortly thereafter. Burnham owned a sawmill in 1667 and was a veteran of Indian conflicts. The property remained in the Burnham family until 1795, when the house was sold to Col. John Patch (164:149). Patch was a The house vas sord to Coi. leading Revolutionary War Ilgure. He served on the Committee of Correspondence, was a privateer, and owned Castle Hill. In 1814 Abner Day bought the property and ran a popular tavern called the Franklin House for many years.
The Franklin House served as headquarters for the Whigs of Essex County. The house contains structural features characteristic of the 17th, 18th, and 19th Centuries, with the majority of the material pointing toward a construction date of about 1730. The front part of the house, which has an unbalanced floorplan and rooms of varying dimensions, correlates with that period, while the large rear ell is early 19th Century in style. The cellar under the older part contains framing with bold chamfers of 17th Century style, which was probably reused from an earlier building on or near the site. In the attic there is evidence that the front part of the house originally had a roof of East Anglian principal purlin type construction, which is most often seen on 17th Century houses but may be the work of a conservative 18th century housewright.
The two main stories of the older part of the house contain a quantity of 18th Century molded woodwork. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (cont'd) Something to Preserve, together "the evidence suggests that the date of the house is that of its earliest paneling (about 1730) and that it was built on the unbalanced floorplan of an earlier house (built in the 1670's), the only remaining evidence of that strucutre being the re-used timbers in the cellar." While the house contains interesting material from several periods, its architectural importance rests primarily on the quality and extent of 18th Century paneling the house retains. The fireplace detail is high style, and 1s considerably more sophisticated than most paneling that istcated fhan nose 1at can be seen in houses of similar data. The Burnham-Patch House occupies a key site, bracketing (with the Heard-Lakeman House, form #167) the southern end of Turkey Shore Rd., an ancient way along the river.
