Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) This farm is recorded in deeds running back to the seventeenth century, with its stream, relatively level meadows, and good soil.
The present farm house, which retains a number of Federal mantels, some Federal sash, and other Greek Revival elements, was built in 1795 or 1796 by a descendant of Robert Redman who first leased the land from the Ponkapoag Indians in 1725. The farm attained social and cultural prominence in the mid- to late-nineteenth century when writer Thomas Briley Aldrich and his family entertained other notable American writers there. 10.
