Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Andover National Bank building at 23 Main Street was completed in 1890. The local contracting firm of Hardy & Cole followed the designs of Hartwell & Richardson of Boston, who also created Abbott Academy's Draper Hall and the second Episcopal Church on Central Street. "At its opening the building was occupied by the Andover National Bank and Andover Savings Bank on the first floor, the Merrimack Mutual Fire Insurance Company and several professional offices on the second florr, and the St. Matthews Masonic Lodge on the third floox. The Andover National Bankwas founded in 1826 with Samuel Farrar president and Amos Blanchard cashier. From 1826 to 1889 the bank occupied a three-story, brick Federal- style building-- very similar to the original Andover Theological Seminary buildings-- on the same site.
The Andover Savings Bank also shared space in this building. The plain boxy shape of the building is distinguished by its multifarious brickwork patterns (surface only, no three-dimensional texture) and by its distinctly tiered fenestration. The change in window types from plate glass storefronts to paired rectangular windows to tripartite arched windows indicates the differing functions within as well as an architectural order, in a grand if abbreviated manner that echoes larger urban skyscrapers. The vertical orientation, size, and scale of this solid brick building give it a commanding presence on the generally low and linear streetscape.
The Andover National Bank is significant (1) as an example of the larger scale commercial development occurring in Andover during the late 19th century, and (2) as a fine illustration of period architecture by the noted Boston firm of Hartwell & Richardson. The property retains integrity of design, materials, workmanship, and setting, and meets Criteria A and C of the National Register. 10.
