It is basically a long rectangle with the narrow end facing the street. The tall narrow facade has an entrance on the left side with a porch stoop and square columns supporting a balustraded cornice. The doorway has a large rectangular transom. At the right corner of the facade is a cylindrical tower with a conical roof.
There is a small balcony on console brackets below one of the tower windows. Above the second-story windows there is a continuous stringcourse with an unusual inverted triangular stone over each window. The eaves brackets are simple stone scrolls. There are several stone wall dormers in the mansard roof; they display an ogee gable reminiscent of the Flemish style. The house is located on a narrow lot (50 feet wide), and the side elevations are relatively unornamented. The rear wall is brick. The house stands on a high basement which contained the servants' quarters. The interior has twenty-six rooms; there are five fireplaces. The fourth floor is a large ball room. 8.

The house was designed by Cudell and Richardson, probably Cleveland's most important architectural firm in the 1880s. Tiedemann was a merchant and "capitalist" who was representative of the greatest period of Cleveland's industrial growth. Hannes Tiedemann (1832-1908) was a wholesale grocer in the firm of Weidemann and Tiedemann beginning in 1864. In 1883 he was a founder and vice president of the Savings and Trust Company on Euclid Avenue, one of the first banking institutions organized in Ohio under the law permitting the establishment of trust companies. Some structure was located on the Tiedemann property on Franklin Avenue as early as the 1860s; the family lived continuously at this address from 1866 to 1895. The present definitive form of the Queen Anne house was erected in 1881, according to the best available county property records.
Cudell and Richardson, identified by a carved stone on the building, were the architects of several large and important churches and the most progressive commercial structures of the 1880s in Cleveland, but very few residences have been positively attributed to them. The style of the house is exactly contemporary with architectural developments in Chicago and New York. It exemplifies the asymmetrical massing, bluntness, rock-faced stonework and carved effects of the idiom which expressed the ambitions of the newly-rich merchant class in America. Tiedemann died in 1908 at the age of 75. In the twentieth century the house was occupied by a German singing society, the Deutsche Socialisten, and later the Bildungsverein Eintracht club.
In recent years the house has been called "Franklin Castle" and received much publicity as a haunted house, but these appellations go back no further than ten or fifteen years. 9.
