Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) No. 459 Lowell St was built ca. 1835 for Paul Bailey Follansbee, then described as a farmer. Follansbee (1811-1900) had moved to Andover from West Newbury and married Eliza Chase in 1834. In the late 19th century, Follansbee was described as a florist and nurseryman, planting rare trees, shrubs, and vines, as his interest in cultivation apparently became more specialized. Follansbee was also an amateur geologist and archeologist, exhibiting his Indian relics at the town's 250th anniversary celebration in 1896.
Perhaps the origins of this locally unique design are in Follansbee's native West Newbury; there are certainly no precedents for this high-style building anywhere in Andover. The cubical building has a low hip roof, wide flat pilasters (four across the facade) and entablature, and a center portico with Ionic columns. The near-original setting with its extensive sloping lawn also contributes to the significance of this imposing property. The Follansbee House is primarily significant for its impressive and unique Greek Revival design. The building retains integrity of design, materials, workmanship, and setting; it meets Criterion C of the National Register. 10.
