Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Pillsbury-French House at 103 Dascomb Rd was actually built for Willian Clark ca. 1780-90. Clark moved to Tewksbury under mysterious circumstances of misfortune, and the house was sold at auction. Jacob French was living here in 1791, and his family actually bought the property about 1795. Peter French kept a store of Lowell of $4250. Battles quickly resold in 1843 to Capt. Paul Pearson Pillsbury, who moved to Andover from New Hampshire.
Pillsbury (1797-1882) was married first to Hannah Frost of Tewksbury and second to Sarah Stevens of Andover. His descendants lived on the property until 1926. The comfortable Georgian design displays an outstanding Greek Revival renovation, with corner blocks, classical doorway, pedimented gable ends, and heavy porch which significantly alter the original effect. The interesting similarities and contrasts between this house and its original neighbors-- 4 Lovejoy Rd and 125 Dascomb Rd-- all built and then renovated contemporaneously, form an interesting example of architectural evolution in the rural outskirts of town. The powerful details added to No. 103 Dascomb are particularly striking in this well-preserved series.
The Pillsbury-French House is significant (1) for its associations with the growth of southern Andover, and (2) for its attractive Georgian design, which is enhanced by a Greek Revival renovation. The property retains integrity of design, materials, workmanship, and setting, and meets Criteria A and C of the National Register. 10.
