Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) No. 6-8 High St was built in 1846 for Benjamin Punchard, businessman, manufacturer, and philanthropst. Punchard was born in Salem MA in 1799. At 15 he began work as a clerk in a brokers office and later in a West India store, becoming a partner in the latter by the age of 20. Broken health from overwork led Punchard to Andover in 1827. He soon became a large stockholder in the new Andover Bank and formed a mercantile partnership (in dry goods) with brother-in-law John Derby.
In 1829 Punchard married Martha Marland, daughter of Abraham Marland, with whom he joined in 1834 to incorporate Marland Manufacturing Company- Punchard became one of the original stockholders (with his father-in-law) in the new Episcopal Church in 1836, and remained one of its strongest supporters. A relative described the accomplished man thusly: "Perhaps no one characteristic is more prominent in my recollections of him, than the habit of doing everything, which he undertook, remarkably well. Neatness, order, and exactness, were early and abiding traits of character, which were always conspicuous."1 The first home in Andover which Punchard owned was a Federal-style mansion which was located on the present site. After 15 years in the house, a second break- 33 High St) and built the present house according to his own designs.
Fortunately "he also had an eye to architectural proportions and beauty."2 This still "commodious $5000 worth of furniture and furnishings. The personal estate totalled over $150,000 and was generously dispersed. Most significantly, Punchard left $50,000 to the Town of Andover for the establishment of its first free high school, which bore his name. After Mrs. Punchard's death in 1871, the house was sold to a series of relatively short-term owners until its sale to the Barnard family in 1891, where it remained for more than 50 years. Historical Significance, continued businessman (in shoe manufacturing) and gave the property the name of Barnard Elms. The I-shape building at 6-8 High Street is an effective background for a variety of architectural motifs. Punchard's role in the design has resulted in an interesting vernacular composition-- more fanciful than forceful-- unlike many of his peers' architect-designed homes. The building has a picturesque form, its central pavilion flanked by one-story porches; simple sawn eaves brackets and decorative window trim are other notable features of this prominently located building.
The Benjamin Punchard House is significant (1) for its associations with the physical development of downtown Andover; (2) for its connection with two leading busimessmen in town; and (3) as an early and interesting example of the Italianate sty ee in Andoved. The property retains integrity of design, materials, workmanship, and setting, and meets Criteria A, B, and C of the National Register.
