Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Barnard Block, 10-16 Main Street, was built in 1910 by Henry W. Barnard. Barnard (1868-1938) was the son and business partner of his father, Jacob W. Barnard, who established a shoe manufactory about 1855- The business was.. carried on in buildings on Barnard St until its closing in 1931. J.W.Barnard & Son was formed in 1894 with Henry in general charge of the business, ewhich employed about 200 persons.

The substantial fortune which accrued to the distinguished Barnard family (Jacob lived in the old Punchard mansion on High St) resulted in many real estate investments. Three commercial buildings on Main St-- 10-16, 27, and 36-38-- are the most conspicuous examples of the Barnards' extensive holdings. At one time, Jacob Barnard was the largest real estate owner in Andover, and his descendants have continued that interest in the town's physical development. Lively polychrome trim is the outstanding feature of this building, which 1s loosely based on classical motifs. The use of such formal details as Palladian windows, facade pediment, Ionic columns, and quoins make this one of the downtown area's most inspired and well-developed 20th century buildings.

The Barnard Block is the downtown's best example of early 20th century design, significant for its handsome Neo-Classic styling and its association with the growth of the central business district. The building retains integrity of design, materials, workmanship, and setting; it meets Criteria A and C of the National Register. 10.
