Themes (check as many as applicable) The Abiel Pearson House is significant (1) as the home of an early 19th century physician; (2) for its associations with the physical development of downtown Andover; and (3) as a fine example of Federal period architecture in the town. The property meets Criteria A, B, and C of the National Register, retaining integrity of design, materials, workmanship, and setting. 9. 1807 for Abiel Pearson, physician, who began a practice in South Parish in 1787. Pearson (1756-1827) was born in Byfield MA and Graduated from Dartmouth College in 1779. "He was esteemed as a physician and respected as a good citizen."1. Abiel was also uncle to Eliphalet Pearson, the first principal (1778-86) of Phillips Academy. Pearson's first wife Mary died with the birth of her fourth child in 1800; he married second Deborah Sparhawk of New Hampshire, in 1816. Pearson's home was aptly described as a mansion house in its sale to Benjamin Punchard in 1829. Iwo years earlier, at Pearson's death, the homestead wws valued at $3000, the furnishings at $986. At this time the property also included a wood house, chaise house, barn, and medical shop.
A room-by-room inventory provides a fascinating portrait of a well-to-do life in the early 19th century- The house was occupied by Benjamin Punchard, merchant ánd manufacturer, from 1829 to 1846, when it was moved from its original location at the junction of Main and High Converted 12008 Mrs. Dolloff and Mr. James Frye. After Punchard's death the house was sold to trader here at least until 1879, when he placed the property in trust for his daughter, Hannah Flint. Flint heirs owned the property until 1935. The elegent Federal-style design of this building is most distinguished by its prominent roof balustrade, which conceals an almost flat hip roof. The plain, boxy form is graced by a well-proportioned facade and an impressive classical doorway-- unexpectedly traditional without the fanlight. 10.
