Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Third Railroad Station, serving the B&M's line from Boston to Lawrence, was opened in 1908.
The new brick and stone building replaced a much largex, wood-frame depot which was built over the tracks. That second station was built ca. 1850 in a handsome Italianate style. The first railroad station downtown, built ca. 1835 on Essex Street, was subsequently converted into a theater and now holds town offices. The well-developed Shingle style of the building follows a pattern of similar railroad stations in the region. The 1ow, compact form with its rounded, organically derived motifs is nicely complemented by a fifty foot long passenger arcade. The Third RaiIroad Station is significant (1) for its associations with local commerce during Andover's peak industrial period, and (2) as one of Andover''s best examples of Shingle-style architecture. The building retains integrity of design, materials, workmanship, and setting, and meets Criteria A and C of the National Register. 10.
