Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) No. 276 North Main St was built ca. 1845-47 for manufacturer John Dove (1805-76). A machinist by trade, John Dove emigrated from Scotland in 1833. In 1834 he arrived in Andover, where he engaged in flax manufacturing with Peter and John Smith. Dove's business specialty was the machinery-- "His knowledge of that department contributed Dove was known for his and benevolent movements of the day. Dove was an early member of the Free Congregational Church in Andover and made generous gifts to the Andover Theological Seminary, Phillips Academy, and Memorial Hall Library. At his death Dove left a fortune valued between $800,000 and $1 million. Dove was married to Ellen McLaggan and had five daughters and one son.
Arden was inherited by Dove's two unmarried daughters, Isabella and Helen, who also received $50,000 in trust for the maintenance of the homestead. Helen died in 1884, Isabella in 1887. Son George owned his own home at what is now 250 North Main St, and so the house was sold in 1891 to William and Ellen Ayer Wood. The property's stature and proximity to Frye Village made it eminently desirable to Wood and his dreamed Shawsheen Village, which replaced Dove's early mill complex- William Wood (1858-1926) was founder of the American Woolen Company and the carefully planned Shawsheen Village, a model conmunity of mill, housing, commercial, and recreational facilities.
This second generation of textile manufacturers left his own substantial mark-- including a 57-mill empire (which in 1926 was called "the greatest achievement any man has made in the woolen industry"3) and a personal estate of over $4 million. The Wood family still owns and occupies Arden. CONTINUED 10. The architect may have been Theodore Voelkers of Boston, as a bill submitted by Chickering for extra work here included a payment. to a I. Voelckers. Chickering's "extra work" included installing marble, extra finishing on doors (perhaps graining?), and inside shutters-- an indication of the grand furnishings of this estate. The exterior design of this mansion stands out in Andover not only as a high-style period piece but also as a magnificent example of architectural inspiration in any style. Dripping bargeboards, flushboarding, label moldings, a cupola, and an elaborate porch and porte cochere are the most outstanding architectural features. The original setting of the house includes a Gothic greenhouse and barn.
Arden is an extremely prominent property in Andover's cultural history- (1) for its association with the Dove and Wood families, manufacturers whose prominence was established in the mid-19th century and continues through the present; (2) as a major example of a Gothic Revival estate with its outbuildings and landscaped setting intact; and (3) for its associations with the well-known architect Theodore Voelkers and local builder Jacob Chickering. The property retains integrity of design, materials, workmanship, and setting, and meets Criteria A, B, and C of the National Register.
